Scourging of the Nire
Melody and Rosie Galamoth head off toward the Magic Forest to find a mate for Rosie's unicorn mare.To get there, they must travel through the Nire, a kingdom of hobbits north of Alitrem. When the princesses arrive, they discover that the halfings have been enslaved by Volanthian soldiers from the frozen north. One halfling encourages the princesses to help them take back the Nire, so the three lead a revolt.
First, they take over an outdoor prison reserved for the hobbit trouble-makers. Exactly the type of people needed in a revolution.
Next, they attack the barracks of Volanthian soldiers, who without their armor on, are overwhelmed by the number of hobbits attacking them.
The hobbits then throw a big party (no one parties like hobbits) and thank the princesses.
The Outcast
The princesses reveal their mission to find a unicorn to the hobbits, who tell them to seek out a lone hobbit who lives on the border between the Nire and the Magic Forest. This hobbit reveals that he is an outcast from the Nire, a punishment for his crime of hunting unicorns. He says that he was compelled against his will to hunt them by a powerful green dragon. He was free of the spell once the dragon was flushed from the Magic Forest by an elven king (Ivellios) and a human prince (the princesses father, who is now king) many years ago.
But he warns that his partner in crime, known as "The Hunter", remains in the forest, hunting down unicorns for profit (their horns are extremely valuable). The Hunter also can control werewolves in the forest, making him an even more formidable opponent.
The hobbit begs the princesses to take him as his guide, so he can redeem himself of his former crimes. The princesses reluctantly agree.
The Prophecy
During the first night in the forest, the princesses awake in the middle of the night and discover a mysterious centaur standing right next to them. He is gazing upwards at the night sky, and say, "the daughters of the horse lord rise to meet the hunter." When the two look up, they see two heavenly bodies near each other and a constellation that looks like a man with a bow. Before they are able to ask the centaur any questions, he gallops away. But the princesses figure out that the prophecy is about them, since they are daughters of the king of Alitrem, well known for its expert use of horses in battle.
The Last Unicorn
After a day or two they gallop straight into the web of a giant spider web and get caught. They then hear loud howls, which they fear is the Hunter and his werewolves. But their more immediate concern is the large spider set to devour them. But Princess Rosie, who always had a special way with animals, was able to soothe the spider's anger, and before long the spider was snuggling with her. But the nearby howls grew louder.
Just then a unicorn bolted into the grove, followed closely by an elven maiden. The maiden informed them that hers was the last unicorn. All the others in the Magic Forest had been killed for their horns.
Rosie and Melody convinced the maiden to leave the forest with her unicorn and come start a new life in Alitrem. With the werewolves so near, she readily agreed and they all ran back toward the Nire.
The werewolves and the hunter were close at bay as they reached the river, but they were able to cross unscathed.
