Dice and Special Card Decks

Rory's Story Cubes

Need some inspiration for your next adventure or for generating Kingdom Events? Just roll these pictogram dice and let your imagination run wild. There are 9 six-sided dice, each unique; so that's a total of 54 different pictograms!

My daughter received this as a gift from relatives. They rolled all the dice at once (and there are a lot!) and came up with very long stories, so I recommend just grabbing three or four at random to keep things simple (adventures with too many elements, twists and nuances just end up confusing players).

Let's see what I can come up with rolling 4 of the dice. I rolled "Pirate", "Treasure Chest", "Buddhist Temple", and "Scorpion":

The PC's come across a band of pirates stealing a treasure chest from a sea-side monastary. If the PC's defeat the pirates, they may decide to keep the treasure for themselves, instead of returning it to the reclusive monks ("don't they take a vow of poverty anyway?"). If so, a scorpion inside the chest stings them when they open it! Serves them right for stealing from holy men.

Tip: Try connecting one or two of the dice you roll to a previous adventure. I always like having some connections to the past, though there should be new elements to the adventure too.

Pound-O-Dice

If you're even slightly careful about not losing things, you'll never, ever need to buy dice again! But if you're like me, you will anyway. Gamers love buying dice!

A handful of dice in this package may be damaged and unusable, and it's by no means equally distributed among the various die types (d4, d6, etc.), but overall it's a great bargain.

Critical Fumble Deck (Gamemastery)

In D20 systems like Pathfinder and D&D, rolling a "1" on a d20 can result in a critical fumble. I struggle to come up with what actually happens off the top of my head, and it's always, "OK, you drop your sword".

Not very imaginative, right? Well use this deck instead and there are a lot more options than that! The cards are compatible with D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder, but can be converted to other systems as well by an experienced GM.

Evil Hat Productions Fate Dice

Fate dice (aka "Fudge Dice") each have two sides with '+', two with '-', and two blank. The notation is dF. So 4dF means to roll 4 fate dice. The '+' is a 1, the '-' is a -1, and a blank face is zero. When you add up 4dF it makes for a very nice probability distribution:

These dice are designed for use in the Fate: Core System and the older Fudge RPG, but can be used as a house rule in any other RPG too to "fudge" the roll under certain conditions.

Munchkin Deluxe

Sometimes a session ends a little early, or you're waiting for the guy who's always late (you know the one!). So fill that void by playing a game that pokes fun at the very RPG games you love so much.

Each turn, a player opens a door, kills a monster (or dies trying) and takes its treasure (the essence of being a Munchkin!). Backstabbing other players is the funnest part!

Set of Unusual Dice

Did you ever need to roll for something to happen to a random party member and there were 5 in the party? So you roll a d6 and reroll if you get a 6. Or say there are 7 options to choose from. you roll a d8 and ignore 8's.

Everyone knows there are only 6 types of RPG dice, right? You know, d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and d20. Wrong!

Did you know there are also d5, d7, d14, d18, and d22? Check it out!

GameMastery Chase Cards Deck

This deck has 3 types of cards: city, dungeon and forest.

Each card is an obstacle (skill roll) that needs to be overcome. During a chase scene, both the pursuer and pursued draw a card periodically. Who succeeds and fails determines whether the pursuer gains ground or loses it.

Once the distance is short enough, the quarry has been caught and a battle likely ensues. If the distance becomes too great the guy gets away.

Tip: I've used these cards in non-chase situations too. For example, if the characters are traveling through the forest to get somewhere you can draw a forest card. If the characters fail the challenge, it might take them an extra day to get to their destination.

Other RPG Dice

There is a large assortment of dice products, from a single set of high quality colored dice, to a pack of all d6's, to gigantic grab bags of assorted dice.
