During Alejandro's watch, five men sprung upon our heroes and, when it became obvious that resistance was futile, captured the three of them. They tied them together lead them towards the Caves, headed by a Captain Tran. Within a couple of hours, they arrived at the temporary camp of Baron Imoldo and his men. The trio was caged in the middle of the camp, and found another prisoner with them.........a woman.
In a masterful mix of chivalry and cunning, Alejandro tested and befriended the unsuspecting guard by asking him for the simplest of favors -- a drink of water for the lady! Assuring the guard that he needed use of his hands to aid this important prisoner, Alejandro convinced the guard to untie him.
Later that morning, the Baron himself, flanked by two of his personal guard, came to see his latest quarry. Somewhat wary of Ale's charm, he questioned Khal about their doings in the area. Khal weaved a tale of the Orcs capturing his sister Rena (long ago dead) and that they were attempting to rescue her. Unfortunately, the Baron then revealed that since they had formed an alliance with the Orcs, he would verify Khal's story with them when they arrived that evening...
After the arrival of a rider dressed in green and brown robes, the trio surmised that this alliance against the Mercati had grown to include the Baron, Impuniti, Orcs, and Roamers -- truly a fearsome axis!
Deciding it was imperative for an escape attempt, Alejandro distracted his guard-friend Dwigo while Khal and Mouse wrested themselves from their binds and Khal luckily picked the lock to the cage. Alejandro used Ghost Sound to attract Dwigo away from the cage, Mouse set off to set some tents on fire as a diversion, and the other three charged south announcing that the Orcs had betrayed them.
Circling around the camp, they ran into one guard who they quickly bypassed, and headed north toward the Caves of Tamal. The woman, Cerin, was pressed into admitting that she knew the leader of the mercati, Cardo. While traversing a stream, Mercati scouts sprung upon the party and almost loosed a deadly volley of arrows, before recognizing the ironic password "Paladin" mentioned by Alejandro.
Here ends the next chapter of the exploits in Umerus.
