Just a poor boy, he gets no sympathy
The fourth child of Dmitri and Anna Krezkov, and the only child of the couple who survived early childhood, Ilya was next in line to become burgomaster of the walled village of Kresk. From an early age, Ilya was nearly suffocated by his mother's constant attentions. She rarely let the boy out of her sight, and despite Dmitri's attempts to teach the boy the things he would eventually need to know to rule the town, Anna prevented much of her husband's lessons.
Ilya was a kind soul and quite well regarded in town. Though rarely seen outside of his mother's presence, everyone in town seemed to find the young boy quite charming. Only Luca Barbu, a simple-minded man who was charged with watching the town's sheep, ever seemed to dislike Ilya, and this came mostly from a misunderstanding between the two.
When the plague swept through Kresk, Ilya quickly became ill. He suffered from a terrible fever for over a day before dying in his sleep. His mother was overcome with sadness and wept over his body for almost a week. The mysterious Abbot of the Abbey of Saint Markovia arrived in town and cured the plague. With Anna's pleading, the Abbot agreed to resurrect Ilya, but insisted that the boy be taken to the Abbey.
At the Abbey, the Abbot performed a miracle, though not necessarily what Anna had hoped for. He installed a mechanical heart in the boy and brought him back to life. However, the process wasn't quite successful and Ilya found himself ravenously hungry. He and his mother returned to town, but despite her efforts to feed the monster inside him, he found himself changing into a strange shark-like beast. Anna took him to the sheep pens, where he sated his hunger with the tender flesh of the poor animals. As his predations increased, Anna framed poor Luca for the disappearing sheep.
Eventually the townsfolk were rallied into a lynch mob set on killing Luca. Anna played this up despite her husband's attempts to talk them down. The party arrived and exposed Ilya as the monster feeding on the animal. They fought Ilya in his monster form and eventually killed him, ending his short-lived cursed existence. Dmitri, horrified by Anna's actions, banished her from Kresk. He then had Ilya's body burned to ensure his terrible curse would not return.
