Some paths are best left untravelled
The crossroads is the location where the Old Svalich Road turns and splits, with the road heading westward toward Vallaki and south toward the Tser Pool Encampment and the Village of Barovia, while the split road leads to Castle Ravenloft.
The crossroads are relatively high in the mountains, though nowhere near the peaks, and tends to see a good bit of snow during the autumn and spring, and can become completely impassable in winter. To the west is the entrance to the tunnel that leads through the mountains, a stretch of darkness only about a mile long but fraught with danger for unwary travelers. The road south heads down past the Tser Pool waterfalls and can be quite treacherous when it rains.
The road leading to Castle Ravenloft is crooked and lines on both sides with dead trees and strange ruins. It seems to have a perpetual chill and anyone looking down the road will often feel like the shadows are closing in around them.
The party stopped for the night here, thinking it best not to attempt to traverse the mountain tunnel in the dark. They set up camp with the party wagon serving as the central point. In the middle of the night they were attacked by a strange disembodied spirit that called out, "I HUNGER!" over and over. This spectre was quite powerful but was eventually slain and the party decided not to spend more time in the area.
