Definitions and explanation of terms used
- Backgrounds – This is the race and/or culture of the character during their formative years. Custom backgrounds are encouraged (appropriate to genre and power level) with the approval of the Game Master.
- Foundations - A foundation is a skill/ability grouping that limits the applicable skills to as many ranks as are in the foundation as a maximum. The value of a foundation also provides the default for any skills in the group with no ranks in it. Rather than relying on a rigid class, this system uses foundations that may be chosen at the player's discretion to uniquely develop their character.
- Power Level – This is the measure of the power of the characters and their challenges. This influences many of the aspects of the Foundations RPG. The list of power levels are Normal, Heroic, Super Heroic, Legendary, and Epic.
- SFX - This is the group of foundations that are for special effects skills such as magic, superpowers, psionic abilities, mutations, combat styles, or even wild luck. The SFX foundations available are highly dependent upon the genre and setting selected by the players and GM. All of the require approval.
