The Swallowtail Festival is interrupted by a horde of goblins!
As the Swallowtail Festival proceeded onward, Ren'Tel tried his luck at Aesrick Battlehorn's catapult game, but earned only a consolation prize. Meanwhile, Aduvrasious continued his search for the intellectual element in Sandpoint, finding the Curious Goblin bookstore unexpectedly open! While browsing the books available, he found a copy of Remnants of Thassilon with a treasure map hidden inside! Chask Haladan allowed him to take the book and map for free, under the condition that he would get half of the treasure. He recommended the services of Veznutt Parooh at the Way North to decipher the map.
In the church plaza, Thorin witnessed a musical duel between Cyrdak Drokkus and Ameiko Kaijitsu. When it finished, Thorin asked Cyrdak about where Belor Hemlock came from, and he gave an account of the Late Unpleasantness, telling him about Atsuii Kaijitsu's death, Jervis Stoot's murders as the Chopper, Casp Avertin's murder, Belor's assumption of the role of sheriff in the aftermath, and the Sandpoint Fire. He clarified that while the fire was generally considered to be arson, the Chopper was dead by then, and nobody knows who the arsonist could have been. The Late Unpleasantness didn't seem to be the work of a single evil... or, if it was, it was something powerful somehow connected to Stoot and the mysterious arsonist.
As the town convened in the plaza, Ren'Tel and Thorin each talked to Ameiko. She revealed that her amazing curried salmon was the result of experimentation, and that she occasionally performed at the Rusty Dragon. She mentioned that heroic tales of adventure earn the storytellers free drinks, and that her bulletin board is a good spot to look for adventures to start. She made her dislike of Cyrdak explicitly known, and was highly amused by the idea that the two of them ever were an item.
Finally, the moment arrived! Father Zantus ordered the release of the swallowtails, which erupted in a cloud that spread over the city! When he wanted the town's attention for the consecration rites, he detonated a thunderstone, which heralded an unexpected interruption! Goblins swarmed over the city, causing fire, murder, and mayhem! Working together, our intrepid heroes defeated three groups of rampaging goblins, in the process saving a nobleman named Aldern Foxglove.
When the dust cleared, Aldern thanked them for saving his life, asking them to meet him at the Rusty Dragon so he could reward them, and inviting them to join him in a boar hunt in a few days, even offering to buy mounts for them.
