The USS Thunderchild (NCC-63549) was an Akira-class cruiser/heavy cruiser starship in service to the Federation Starfleet in the late 24th century. It was named for the fictional British warship, HMS Thunder Child, from H.G. Wells' novel The War of the Worlds, and had an illustrious service career.
Fleet Admiral Taela Shanthi commanded the ship during its shakedown cruise in 2368. Command was then transferred to Captain Bem Okala from 2368 to 2371. In 2372, the Thunderchild was commanded by Captain Evelyn Hoffman when it transferred Vice Admiral Marta Batanides to the USS Enterprise-E for a diplomatic mission to Chiaros IV. In 2373, the Thunderchild was a participant in the Battle of Sector 001. During this battle, the Thunderchild assisted in the destruction of the attacking Borg cube. Captain Hoffman was promoted to Vice Admiral, and she continued to use the Thunderchild as her flag ship.
She was instrumental in the defense of the Alpha Quadrant and also assisted in the evacuation of the Archanis sector when the Klingon Empire demanded the Federation abandon the sector in just ten days. In 2373, just before the outbreak of open war with the Dominion, the Thunderchild was involved in several skirmishes along the Cardassian border.
During the war itself, the Thunderchild was involved in numerous battles. She was damaged during the battle of the Tyra system, a humiliating defeat for Starfleet as ninety-eight of one hundred and twenty one ships were destroyed. The Thunderchild was one of the few survivors and limped back to Starbase 375. Unfortunately, she was still under repair when Operation Return was launched to re-take Deep Space 9 from Dominion forces.
After the end of the war, the Thunderchild continued operations under Vice Admiral Hoffman, patrolling areas around Deep Space 9 and the Cardassian border. Admiral Hoffman retired from service in 2380, and command of the ship was transferred to Captain Gabrielle Beaumont. Captain Beaumont and the Thunderchild were subsequently transferred to the command of Admiral Nechayev at Narendra Station.
