Weapon (longsword), artifact (requires attunement by a creature of good alignment)

The Blade of Ilmater is a beautifully crafted longsword with a blade that seems to shimmer with a gentle, radiant light. The hilt is engraved with the symbol of Ilmater, the god of endurance and martyrdom. The blade emanates a soothing warmth, offering comfort to those who suffer and strength to those who stand against evil.

History

Rumored to have been forged in the distant past by Ilmater himself, the blade has been passed down and wielded by champions of the downtrodden and protectors of the innocent for centuries. The sword has seen countless battles and has always been a beacon of hope in the darkest times. Legends say that the blade was used to defeat a great demon lord who had brought suffering and despair to the world, and that its power grows with each act of selflessness and sacrifice performed by its wielder.

Abilities

  • Holy Radiance: The Blade of Ilmater deals an additional 3d8 radiant damage to any creature it hits. This damage increases to 6d8 against fiends and undead.

  • Enduring Spirit: While attuned to the Blade of Ilmater, the wielder gains resistance to necrotic and psychic damage. They also gain advantage on saving throws against being frightened or charmed.

  • Healing Grace: As an action, the wielder can cast Heal (no material components required) once per day. Additionally, they can cast Cure Wounds at 5th level three times per day.

  • Martyr’s Blessing: Once per long rest, if the wielder would be reduced to 0 hit points, they can choose to drop to 1 hit point instead and heal all allies within 30 feet for 10d10 hit points. The wielder also gains temporary hit points equal to the amount healed.

  • Aura of Compassion: Allies within 30 feet of the wielder gain advantage on death saving throws and are stabilized automatically if they would start their turn with 0 hit points.

  • Sorrow’s Respite: When the wielder performs a selfless act that causes them significant harm or loss (DM’s discretion), the Blade of Ilmater temporarily unlocks its true power. For the next hour, the wielder gains the effects of a Holy Avenger (as per the DMG), and any healing spells they cast restore the maximum possible amount of hit points.

Sentience

The Blade of Ilmater is a sentient lawful good weapon with an Intelligence of 14, a Wisdom of 18, and a Charisma of 16. It has hearing and darkvision out to a range of 120 feet. The weapon communicates telepathically with its wielder and can speak, read, and understand Common and Celestial.

Curse

If a creature of evil alignment attempts to attune to the Blade of Ilmater, they suffer 10d10 radiant damage and are immediately unattuned. The blade cannot be wielded by a creature that lacks compassion and a sense of duty to protect others.

Destruction

The Blade of Ilmater can only be destroyed by willingly sacrificing it to save a truly innocent soul from certain death. When this happens, the blade shatters into a thousand shards of light that disappear, and the wielder feels a profound sense of peace and fulfillment, knowing they have fulfilled Ilmater’s greatest wish.
