Gurth organizes a party to find a strange stench in the Unlit Lands
Gurth has a problem that there is a decaying stench near a settlement he is responsible for. There is also screaming and wailing coming from near the stench. No one has yet been able to find the source of either, so he gets his Journeywoman, Orchid and hires some adventurers from Turangol to go into the Unlit Lands to find the source. He is offering a Money Plant as a reward.
He gathers Belmont, Yik Yik, Kylk, Orchid, Yani, and Zyandar and takes them into the Unlit Lands and casts a spell on those who do not have Darkvision so they can see in the dark. He takes them through the small village near the source of the stench. They are farmers who grow a specialty fruit that grows from roots. There are tunnels and passages that go in seemingly random directions. Periodically he stops to run his fingers over the edge of a tunnel mouth. He mentions that they are posted there in the Black Zintrini braille language.
Eventually they come to a group of soldiers who salute Gurth. He says that the soldiers will remain there and can be summoned for assistance if needed. He then tells them to get to it and leaves. The soldiers eye the party suspiciously, but eventually tell the party to follow them to the area where the stench is strongest and then the rest is up to the party.
After many twists and turns, they arrive at a room that smells like a week dead water buffalo. One of the guards says that something screams or wails mournfully once in a while. Yik Yik asks if it sounds like a person or an animal. The guard thinks for a second and says animal, since it doesn’t sound like a word.
The party attempts to follow the smell with the kobolds leading the way. The cave system rapidly becomes less worked and more natural. Then the noises start. There is a clicking or clanging coming from nearby. The party heads towards them and arrive in a larger space about 30’x40’. There is a low lamp with a blue light set on the ground and standing near it are large mountain mole men. They are 7’ tall with long arms and hooks on the ends. They are chewing on something, and their mouths and claws are covered in something gooey. They attack.
After defeating them, the party looks around. One of them is wearing a vest of gold coins, they also have some form of beetle alcohol. A detect magic detects nothing. There are signs of things being dragged into the room all from one direction. The party heads that way. There is a series of zigs and zags and up and downs that the party goes through. The party come out into a large room that is easily 100’ across. The floor is moving with centipedes. They are flowing like a river roughly in the direction the party has been heading in. There are gaps int eh flow that the party thinks they might be able to cross without antagonizing the centipedes.
As the party is planning how to get across, movement on the ceiling draws their attention as a bench of what looked like stalactites unfurl and swoop towards the party. Looking around, the party sees an adventurer dead up on a wall that looks like he was trying to get away from the centipedes. The dead adventurer seems to be a dwarf. He has a ring on and raw black star sapphires in his pack. There is a grappling hook hanging on the wall, and it seems to be made of a dark metal with a seahorse motif. The rope on the end is now only about 10 feet long.
There is a glowing bit of bioluminescence on the ceiling. It rings a hole and Yik Yik flies up to it. It leads to another cave area and the stench seems stronger. He secures a rope up there and lets it down for the rest of the party. The party manages to scale the rope into the upper area.
It is a rough triangular shaped tunnel with cracks that range from small to almost passage-like. The smell comes stronger from the west and the party heads in that direction. Yani thinks it is a fishy shell, like a dead sea creature. Eventually the passage levels out and there are shiny bits in the floor and some in the walls. The floor almost looks like a black pool of water. The pool moves. The black pool rises and splits into a few black oozing creatures.
They are acidic and damage the weapons used while hitting them, and slashing weapons cut them into two creatures. The party eventually defeats them. Looking around they find a wax bottle made of black wax. There is a perfectly round black hole at the bottom of one depression. This is a portable hole, and it leads to an even worse stench. They think that the stench was filtered through the black ooze.
Looking through the hole is pitch black and the party can not quite make out anything. They hear a groan or whistling type of sound coming from the hole. The adventurer’s head down the hole. There are large crab like thing with tentacles and pinchers. It is in a 40’x60’ space with a door in one wall. The stench seems to be coming from the door. The party moves to attack the crab creatures.
Searching the area after defeating the crab creatures. The party notices that the carapaces of the creatures now are various bright vibrant colors. There is an arrow, a shirt with snowflake designs, part of a book or tome with beautiful illuminations of a necromantic sort. There are the arms of starfish, as if they eat them. Casting detect magic, the arrow and the shirt are magical.
There is a door that seems to have a moaning sound coming from behind it. There is a pain in the sound, but also a music of sorts. The stench of rotting is almost visual. The party opens the door. It is made of very old, waterlogged wood. There is half of a whale shark that is partially alive. There are purplish worms eating through it’s corpse. There is no water in this area of the unlit lands, so the sea creatures and the whale make no sense. The purple worms form larger groups and turn to face the party.
Yani casts some cures on the whale shark. Some worms are still in it, infesting even its bones, so the cures are a temporary reprieve. The party kills the worms that attacked them. There are still a bunch in the whale shark. There is a silken, lacy glove in the room. Parts of the whale shark are knitted into long ropes, the veins, viscera, and other internal bits. They lead away around the corner. A light comes from around the corner that looks like it is made of stained glass. As the party looks, land squids walk around the corner.
After defeating the squids, the party looks around. There is a stained-glass portal that is encrusted with black and clear coral. The line of viscera rope from the whale shark eye is coiled around the poral rim.
