Ryton has found a strange book with a man trapped in the Illuminations
Master Ryton summons his apprentices and some of their adventuring friends to his office. He tells them that he has a new book that he has been examining and found something strange. There is a man in the illuminations to the side of the manuscript. When the pages are flipped, he moves and is trying to communicate with the reader that he is in trouble. It even appears that he has eaten many of the animals that are also in the side margin illuminations.
Ryton knows nothing of the man but wishes to send the adventurer’s in to investigate and to rescue the man if possible. Piper and Mica, with Thorgrim, Grackle, Joe and Rin agree to go in and investigate. The book is a red and blue tinted leather that is exotic, like ostrich. The front has some semi-precious stones inset. The language looks like it might be from Tivalera and an old one at that.
After translating some of it, he thinks it belongs to some sort of a cult and it speaks of hidden treasures of someone with a very unfamiliar name that might be a person or might be a demon. It does seem to be a book of some sort of hidden knowledge. He plans to give the book to the Library once he is done and the guy is saved.
Ryton shows the party the book and the man in the illuminations. He seems to be a large man dressed in a nice tunic and boots, but no sword. He seems like a peasant as opposed to a monk or knight. Flipping the pages back and forth a few times the man moves differently each time and seems to be aware of the readers.
Ryton says he has some runes that he will cast, and they will spiral us into the book. We will be altered to look like the artistic style of the book. We need to find the guy and get out. We might have to fight various creatures that are also in the illuminations of the margins. He says he will be able to recall the party, but they need to signal him in some manner. He will observe our progress through the book. He gives us some provisions and supplies to give the man.
Ryton sets the book in the center of a large spiral and quickly draws a spiral of runes around it that seems to float in the air. The party moves through the spiral. Ryton says that we should be able to return with items that are on our person when we return, but he is not certain. The party continues and ends up in the illuminations.
The party is now drawn in simple easy to draw versions of themselves. Their gear has been changed to match the style of the illustrations. The party finds themselves in a swampy area and the monkey-bats that fly in to attack the party. When defeated, their eyes turn to ‘X’s and they fall to the ground. Looking around the party finds some golden leaves.
The party collects the gold leaves. The party notices that Grackle looks gaunt and ashen in the way he is drawn. There is a peasant fellow that rushes towards the party. He appears to be the same one that the party saw in the illuminations. He falls to his knees and speaks to the party in a language none in the party understands. The party tries various languages on him, but he does not understand any of the ones that we try. The party offers him the pack with supplies and gear. He seems pleased and shakes everyone’s hand.
Mica casts comprehend languages and can partially understand the man. He says that the big introduction is this way and points to the side. He wants to leave. Mica tries to tell him we will leave but it will take some time. The party heads in the direction he indicates.
The party comes to the edge of the page and the guy indicates they should follow him. He feels around the edge until his fingers disappear over the edge of the book and then he swings himself off the page. The party carefully follows him. They find themselves on another page.
There are a series of strange plants and mushrooms. There are large headless giants with their faces drawn in the chests. They growl at the party and attack with long spears. The party defeats them. Their spearheads are thin slices of paper. Mica tries to get a name out or the guy and the closest they can get is Tony.
We follow Tony up the page to a pl ace that seems like a camp that he lives at. It has some items that he has collected from the book. They seem to be gold, gems and a crown. He collects his treasures into his pack, leaving behind things like bedrolls and such. The party follows him up to the text area. The words all appear to be reversed to our side. He points to one part of the text and say, “The book starts here and the buried starts here” He takes them to the edge of the text and pulls it upwards as if there is something stuck onto the page and a pocket behind it.
The party follows, but when Piper tries to swing through, she has trouble getting into the pocket, but finally manages. The party finds themselves in a place that seems covered in glue. There seems to be scribbles on this side of the page, including a lewd illustration. There are a few more of these jump points that seem to flip past a number of pages until the party finds themselves confronted by rhinoceros with a horn that looks like a unicorn horn and long legs and spots like a giraffe. They snort an attack.
Mica tries to draw a pen around his beast, and it manages to move out before he finishes. He evades the attacks and finishes his pen and tris to lure the beast into it. It is easily tricked into the pen and lays down to munch grass Mica drew inside it. There is a tree in the original pen with a bird in the fruit branches. The fruit looks like large goodberries. The bird in the tree looks like a scarecrow version of a Hand Footed Crow.
Tony points and waves then ducks down. Something in the distance is coming closer and Tony is scared of them. They appear to be harpies with three faces; maiden, matron, and crone. They attack. During the battle Thorgrim tries to communicate with his and they respond in various languages and settle on a form of elvish that some party members can understand.
The party tells them that we are here to recue Tony. They tell us to take him and go. Grackle asks what this place is, and one starts to tell the party but the rest shush her. Mica asks if he can approach, and they agree. He uses his artist kit to fix up their clothes and make their faces look more defined and less lumpy. One asks Rin if he is a servant of Vaid. She says yes, and they respond that we are walking in a place of a greater secret. They ask for a demonstration of good faith and they will explain more. Rin tries to cure one of the harpies, but they do not want her to touch them.
Rin shows them some sigils of Secrets carved in her armor. They agree that is sufficient. They tell them that they are guarding an ancient secret and the party should take Tony and leave. Rin tells them they can’t leave yet and maybe it I time for the secret to be told. Rin casts comprehend languages on herself and tries to read the text on the inside of the pocket. She can’t make out much, but it seems to reference the origin of Nowhere. They are written in brown in a cube. After rolling, Mica climbs up to the letters forming the brown cube. The pocket dissolves and the party finds themselves standing on a page full of text with a huge illumination of demon like creatures. They rush to attack.
Joe and Grackle stand before the party to protect them. Thorgrim and Piper make the signs for home to see if Ryton will return them. Rin and Mica draw large holy symbols that underscore the clerical and paladin power of the group.
Before the demons reach the party, Ryton pulls the group out of the book along with Tony. Tony mentions that there is a secret between the pages of the book that talks about the squares of space and how to find them or what they are. Ryton asks him how he knows this, and Tony is evasive and says someone must have told him.
