With Valteri Tomser's repair of the wagon axle, the group continues on, discussing Barsaive rumors, the recent war, and their destinations of Axalalail and Urupa. They find out that Theo Nav is a carpenter looking to start a family with his young wife, Ibil, in Urupa, which is why the young couple joined the caravan. Tokoba, a female dwarf, is a follower of Chorrolis. Delmuth's trade goods are cloths bound for Urupa.
When Delmuth's caravan stops for the night, Sean Shamshara attempts and fails to tie up the horses, so Fhin takes over while Valteri laughs. The scout again attempts to help by setting up and starting the campfire. Again Fhin has to do it for him.
While Ibil and Theo cook dinner, Fhin discusses the coming night and how to split up the watch. Considering the caravan had only just met the heroes, Valteri, Sean, Boris Hillmens, and Vyktor Wyvernjack will have to set up their bedrolls a little ways away from the rest of the caravan. Close enough to help in trouble, but far enough that if they were the source of the trouble the other guards could respond fast enough.
The group gathers around the campfire to share in the dinner when Boris's Danger Sense notices trouble coming. Several heroes and guards quickly attempt respond as arrows fly out from the surrounding woods north of the road and from behind rocks and trees west of the camp. Tokoba, resting on one of the wagons, is severely injured.
Bandits! And a large number. The party splits, with Boris, Thommel, and Jorik rushing across the road to engage the six bandits there. Boris's skin changes, taking on the look and texture of wood, hardening to damage. Several bandits are knocked unconscious or killed, one accidentally skewered by friendly fire. Boris engages the leader on that side, knocking him down only to be knocked down himself in turn. Thommel rushes to help while Jorik chases the fleeing bandits across a stream. Summoning fire to sear his wounds, Boris stands and proves his worth, slamming the side of his ax hard down on the bandit's head, knocking him out of the fight.
To the west, Valteri, Sean, Fhin, and Vyktor scramble to defend from the arrows in that direction, taking cover behind boulders as they advance on the four over here. Meanwhile Delmuth, Ibil, and Theo take cover. Tokoba manages to crawl over to Delmuth, and he attempts to stabilize her bleeding.
Fhin and Valteri team up to take down bandit after bandit while Vyktor throws several Mind Daggers, making it easier for Sean's arrows to find their mark. Having finished with his foes, Boris begins to rush to help the others. One bandit, sensing the inevitable, tells his boss they should flee, but the bandit will have none of it, insisting they continue the fight. However, when the last lower bandit finally attempts to run, he's feathered by Sean before he can get away. The last bandit still up and now surrounded, refusing to surrender, finds his head removed from his body by Fhin's Scythian axe.
Having tended to Tokoba, Delmuth ties up those bandits still alive while the others cut the left ears off the two dead. They set up loose wood around the dead, and Vyktor casts Flame Flash until the bodies are thoroughly burned. The plan is to strap the captured bandits to the remaining three horses and turn them over to authorities in Axalalail for a reward.
Fhin searches all the bodies, even the dead before burned, and turns up several booster potions, a salve of closure, 120 silver, and some armor and swords. He shares most of it with the heroes, but takes 2 booster potions and gives one to Tokoba. Fhin also backs off on the request that the group camp a little ways down the road, having proven they were willing to sacrifice themselves to save the caravan.
