On a dark morning during the Third Age, Amadeus Veks, the High Inquisitor of Pelor, led an assault on Castle Verdant to liberate the Verdant Realm from under the warmongering regency of Quintus Barclay. For in truth, Veks had learned that Barclay was none other than a disguise crafted by Rule-of-Three, the shapeshifting cambion and son of the demon lord Graz'zt.

When Barclay tried to escape to the Abyss, he was arrested by Veks, who issued a divine edict that the fiend "stop lying". With his signet ring pressed firmly into Barclay's forehead, cambion was forced back into his natural form, no longer able to change forms or tell a lie. At that moment, the clouds broke over Verdun and the sun rose to herald the dawn of the Brightest Day.

Whether the ring already possessed such magic or was empowered by Veks's actions is unknown, but following the eventual death of Amadeus Veks, the ring of the high inquisitor has been passed down through the church, functioning as an artifact for those who would seek to reveal the absolute truth. The ring itself is made simply, featuring a large faceted sunstone engraved with the Veks family sigil set into a wide white gold band.

The ring requires attunement and can magically adjusts to be worn by a creature of any size, but its beneficial properties only work for someone of lawful good or lawful neutral alignment. A chaotic or evil creature that wears the ring immediately takes 20d6 radiant damage. This damage ignores resistance and immunity, and can't be reduced or avoided by any means. A creature reduced to 0 hit points by this damage disappears in a blinding flash and is destroyed, leaving its possessions behind.

Insightful. You have proficiency with Insight while wearing the ring. Additionally, your Wisdom score increases by 2, to a maximum of 24.

Enlightened Magic. While wearing the ring, any spell slot you expend to cast a cleric or paladin spell counts as a spell slot of one level higher.

Return to Form. Any creature that comes into contact with the ring reverts to its natural form, and loses its shapechanger subtype, if it had one. If the creature is evil, the ring's symbol is branded upon it where the ring made contact.

Compel Honesty. While wearing the ring of the high inquisitor, you are unable to overtly lie, deceive, or misinform. It is possible to omit information or conceal information, but only if doing so does not contradict the facts (as you know them).

Mantle of Inquisition. You gain a protective halo. This halo sheds bright light in a 10-foot radius and dim light for an additional 10 feet. You can dismiss or manifest the halo as a bonus action. While present, the halo grants you the effects of true seeing and zone of truth spells. In addition, fiends and undead within the halo's bright light make attack rolls against you with disadvantage.
