Naturally, they did. And in a single day, almost every nobleman in the empire had the mark of the demon on his skin. The world ripped open, and demonic armies marched on the land. The empire collapsed, and the new "tieflings" fled into their claustrophobic city states. The common man was murdered, enslaved, or worse, with only a lucky few able to make it to the "Shattered Isles" - a series of safe haven islands said to have been created thousands of years earlier when Eladrin wizards broke the world.
Eventually, heroes were able to close the gates that covered the land, driving the demons back to the abyss. Some semblance of peace and order were returned to the land.
A hundred years after that event, the empire is back, seemingly under a banner of peace. The nations of the Shattered isles have fallen to feuding and petty politics. Small-scale warfare dominates the political landscape, and many would-be lordlings raise mercenary armies with the intent of carving out a swath of the wild for their own. The demons may be gone, but evil still grips the land. Only this time, it is found in the hearts of men...
Shattered Isles is a Dungeons and Dragons campaign setting. It originally began as a setting for the 4th edition rules set. Since then, it has been used in basic ("BECMI") games, as well as a few 2nd edition D&D games. It is currently adapted to the 5th edition rules set. Many different players have been involved in the setting's development over time, and 150 years of "game time" have elapsed since the very first session in 2010.
