Kjent lies at the crossroads of four major King's Toll Roads, and has become the dumping ground for many undesirables. Technically under the rule and protection of the City of Ryde Hill, the wooden-walled, untidy village of Kjent sits upon the shores of Lake Kjent where it meets the Tenterden-Kjent flow. Less than a day's ride south via Toll Road 10 is the Haightwall, and the threat of the Sable Fang Tribelands of the Low Plains beyond. Kjent's Ferry, connects Toll Road 12 from the East to Toll Road 13 to the west, providing access to the High Plains. Finally, Toll Road 11 leads south, passing the idyllic Charming Cove and Ellsmere Hold beyond, nestled overlooking Northgate Bay.
Kjent is known for its enveloping wheat fields and the great flour mill. The mill is located in Wheatsprawl District, near Baker's Gate to the southeast. Wheat and grain are major exports, and Kjent's bread is the best the Midlands offer. Many travelers, once they have tasted Kjent Bread, find it hard to leave. The fact that the bakers of Wheatsprawl regularly give the day-old breadstuffs to the poor means, like the pigeons and rats in Rathouse District, the unfortunate wretches have little reason to move on.
Hope's House is an oversized wooden temple, large for such a modest village, with a gigantic carved statue of the Starmaiden, Argona. The House is forever in need of initiates, and with the great number of vagrants in the city, not to mention the ailments carried by the vermin and rough and tumble residents of Farrowtown, the domine of the church are always underpaid and overworked.
A notorious landmark, The Clocktower, is located at the top of Clocktower Square, just before the North Road splits into Lord's Road to the north gate and northwest to Kjent Lake Road. The Clocktower is said to be ruled by pigeons, who have rats for their subjects. Presumably, both pigeons and rats are drawn to Kjent on account of the wheat. On a related note, rats also infest the surrounding neighborhoods near the tower, now called Rathouse District. Within the tower's shadow is The Rat's Nest, a seedy tavern and the pride of Rathouse.
Beside the waterfront, south of the ferry is Farrow's District, or Farrowtown. It is known, in part, for its indoor warehouse-style swine farms. Farrowtown contains the slums of Kjent, even worse than those in Rathouse, primarily due to the stench of the swine, which unfortunately carries over through much of the city. Only the lowest and most desperate (or meanest and most vile) reside there. Lady Lezmerelda Farrow, also known as the Swine Queen, controls every aspect of the district from the seclusion of her trashy and rundown "mansion." Despite her lowborn status, she nonetheless commands the respect of not only her rough peasant following but also of Rupert, High Lord of Kjent as well. A rumor has been floating around for years that Lady Lezmerelda has contracted some kind of disease from the pigs and has not been seen outside of her domicile in a decade or more. She runs her business through agents and thugs, who all are reported to be the Swine Queen's direct (and some say incestuous) kin. Pork, and swine byproducts (lard, tallow, etc.), are also major exports, and most citizens of Kjent know the rumors of how one properly disposes of unwanted refuse (or enemies) as the Swine Queen's kin make regular collections to feed the pigs.
