The very small and bucolic village of Furthest Farthing seems unassuming & unimportant enough. A handful of scattered buildings between two hills, Furthest Farthing sits on the very edge of ancient & trackless wilds.

One-half mile to the west lies Farthing's Ford, the only crossing over The River Wash north of Dungpit. Furthest Farthing is also one of the first stops on the road north to Waverly Keep. The man-made Lake Mead lies north, upon the river above the ford - its dam being the reason for the ford. For decades before the locusts wiped out the fields, the toll to cross the wash here was only One Farthing,  hence the small village's name. Currently, Bix, the son of Tom Crane (the innkeeper and town reeve), collects the Farthing toll and escorts travelers wishing to cross the ford. He holds the key to the gate. An ancient and rusted metal sign posted on the locked gate reads:

To Cross the ford, see Crane at the Public House in Furthest Farthing behind you at the hamlet. Bypassing this gate without official escort is a county crime.
