Now in a collapsed tunnel, Elnorin continues to dig toward freedom. It takes some time but they eventually find freedom. They reunite with their horses (minus Gringolet, who remains captured). The group retreats to the south to sleep.
They awaken in the morning and prepare for the day. Following some discussion the party see a messenger on the road heading south. The group make chase and catch up with him.
Braith admonishes the messenger, called Ross, for nearly killing his mount from the gallop. They find out that more notes have been sent to most other tribal capitals (with the exception of The Moot and Tara) and decide to let Ross go.
As the party make their way back they speak with Fergus who mentions Cori, the local druid, who had been driven from the town. She is said to have fled to the forest across the river. They make their preparations to cross the river. They had earlier seen a patrol head out before the messenger but now they see it speed back (apparently having met Ross on the road).
Following their crossing they begin to explore the forest. They are ambushed that night by two women, rangers formerly of Finowen, and they persuade them not to kill the party (or at least Ruric). The halfling woman is called Lena but the human woman does not give her name. The women tell the party that since they can't be trusted, they must stand judgement in the grove of the Green Knight. They are marched a little further into the forest before settling to rest properly.
