This is one of the most poorly documented Legions in Roman history, since it existed for at most a year only. The Legion was raised in 68 AD around the time of emperor Nero's death, so likely some time in June. It was levied in Africa by Lucius Clodius Macer to back his claim to the throne, where he was acting as Proconsul, reinforcing the existing garrison of one Legion, the Legio III Augusta, plus Auxiliaries.
---
During this time Africa was still a province where the governor was selected by the Roman Senate rather than the emperor, and these officials were titled Proconsul as in the days of the Republic. Macer's Legion was given the title of Legio Prima Macriana Liberatrix, or "First Legion of Macer the Liberator". The I Macriana Liberatrix is known mainly from coinage with the legend "LEG I MACRIANA LIB".
---
Macer's usurpation didn't last long and resulted in no fighting. Nero was replaced by the new emperor Servius Sulpicius Galba, who had the rebellious Proconsul executed. The I Macriana Liberatrix was then disbanded at some point in 69 AD, but under what circumstances we don't know. The Legion may have served briefly under Galba and his short-lived successors Otho and Vitellius. Either way, the Legion wasn't kept around and the soldiers were disbanded before ever seeing action.
