04/11/25Zarathar: The Land of Unyielding Spirit and Shifting Sands
Zarathar is a vast, myth-steeped continent defined by its dramatic geography, deep-rooted cultures, and volatile balance between primal spirituality and arcane ambition. It is a land where the eternal winds howl across golden plains, where sacred herds roam alongside thunderous cavalry, and where ancient relics of forgotten civilisations slumber beneath the sands, waiting to be awakened.
Geography and Regions
Zarathar’s terrain is as diverse as its peoples and histories. The continent stretches across temperate forests, wide open plains, rugged mountains, and arid deserts, creating stark regional contrasts that shape the cultures and conflicts found within.
-
The north is dominated by sweeping grasslands and temperate forests, with rich river valleys and scattered highland plateaus. This is where the Stormber hold sway, with the region showing signs of cultural fusion due to long-term integration with subjugated peoples. The land here is ideal for horse herding and the traditional nomadic routes of the Stormber tribes.
-
The central heartland contains a mixture of savannah, hills, and semi-arid badlands, punctuated by prominent magical features such as leylines and spirit-haunted ruins. The Mub Desert, an arid zone blooming with life at its edges, lies at the core. Within this region are leyline nexuses, whose instability makes them both dangerous and coveted.
-
The north west is more temperate and fertile, with a mix of forests, coastal lowlands, and rolling hills, creating a favourable climate for settled agriculture and urban expansion. The coastal lands surrounding the Protectorate of Karesh and the Republic of Azrashras support dense human populations.
-
The south is a rugged frontier, home to dense rainforests, jungle highlands, and volcanic ridges. This is the domain of the Srathi Empire and its militarised, mountainous heartlands. The far southeastern coast around Nombc and Alas is rich in sacred groves and hot, humid forests.
-
Finally, eastern Zarathar shifts into a mix of wooded hills and river valleys, with more gentle terrain that supports cities like those of the Kingdom of Pagen, nestled among leyline-fed lakes and ancient relic sites.
Culture and Conflict
Zarathar’s narrative tension emerges from the cultural collision of pastoral honour and imperial order:
-
The Stormber protectorates like Karesh remain culturally distinct, owing allegiance through tradition and debt rather than annexation.
-
The V'eld, an Anglo-Saxon-inspired people, maintain their identity under Stormber overlordship, a reminder that not all of Zarathar welcomed its current stewards.
-
At the heart of many adventures lies the Aetherian Orbs, mysterious artifacts tied to the Sssylthri, each capable of warping fate, flame, and even time. Custodianship of these orbs often marks a hero—or a kingdom—for greatness… or destruction.

Geopolitical Overview of Zarathar
Zarathar is a continent of diverse terrain, fractured sovereignties, and layered cultural legacies. Power is contested between empires, kingdoms, and protectorates, many of which sit atop older cultures whose influence still shapes daily life.
Northern Zarathar: The Conqueror’s Crown
-
Republic of Shas: A vast northern state formed from Stormber-dominated territory, encompassing a broad swath of plains, rivers, and old-growth forests. While the Stormber rule in name, much of the population belongs to subjugated or integrated cultures, particularly in the central north. This is reflected in the cultural map: a fusion zone where Stormber governance overlays pre-existing regional identities.
-
Kingdom of Rosintas: A fertile realm with close trade ties to Shas, but politically independent. Its identity reflects a blending of local traditions and elite Stormber influence, particularly through noble lineages and cavalry orders.
-
Principality of Øveld: A distant, icy holdout that preserves a more isolated and potentially mystic tradition, culturally distinct from the Stormber or their dominion.
Western Zarathar: Frontier of Legacy
-
Republic of Azrashras & See of Hlaugar: Republics and theocratic enclaves built atop Stormber-splinter or independent cultures. Hlaugar may represent a theological counterbalance, while Azrashras appears heavily tied to forested and temperate biomes.
-
Protectorate of Karesh: Once saved by Stormber warriors during the Iron Horde invasions centuries ago, Karesh is now a loyal, if culturally unique, protectorate. Its peoples retain old customs but fly Stormber banners when war calls.
Central Zarathar: The Crucible of Power
-
Dunirr: A dwarven kingdom confederation hidden deep beneath the Spine of the World, the mightiest mountains in all of Zarathar. Shielded by towering peaks and ancient stonework, the dwarves of Dunirr have remained untouched by surface strife for centuries. Their halls echo with the clang of forges and the murmur of subterranean waterways. They ask little from the world above, desiring only to be left in peace to mine, craft, and preserve their timeless traditions. However, their isolation is not idleness—Dunirr stands ever vigilant against the dark and terrible things that stir in the deep places of the world. This ancient duty, to guard the surface from what lies below, is one reason the dwarves refrain from meddling in the affairs of surface kingdoms.
-
Kingdom of Pagen: A scholarly and arcane power with central institutions like the Royal Academy of Szilad. It occupies a rich landscape of varied biomes and leyline nodes, and likely has friction with Stormber traditions due to its reliance on artifact exploitation.
Southern Zarathar: Faith and Fire
-
Srathi Empire: A militaristic orcish empire based on martial hierarchy and arcane threat containment. It spans a variety of terrain and borders volatile leyline regions, likely maintaining strict control over access to relics and spiritual hotspots.
-
Principality of Alas & Holy State of Nombe: Though of the same culture and lineage, these two nations differ greatly in focus. The Holy State of Nombe is a deeply devout, even fanatical theocracy centred around the worship of their slumbering god, whose will is interpreted by powerful clerics and visionaries. In contrast, the Principality of Alas exists under near-constant martial law, hardened by ceaseless border pressure from the aggressive orcish realms to the west. While sharing faith and kinship with Nombe, the Alasians prioritise military readiness and pragmatic governance over spiritual zealotry.
