Kansas, Missouri (West), Iowa (South & Central), Nebraska, Northeastern Colorado, Southeastern Wyoming
Nicknames: “The Broken Breadbasket,” “The Stormplain,” “The Veinlands”
🧭 Sector Character
Once the thriving center of agriculture and mid-continental commerce, the Kansas Sector is now a fractured mosaic of lawless prairie, hostile ruins, half-buried highways, and scattered enclaves of defiance. Frequent superstorms roll across the plains. Roaming warbands, autonomous drones, mutant tribes, and imperial incursions make survival an act of constant vigilance.
🏙️ Major Ruins & Sites
KaySee (Kansas City Ruins – KS/MO Border)
A shattered metroplex governed by the laws of steel, blood, and code. KaySee is a patchwork of semi-autonomous sectors controlled by scavenger lords, cult enclaves, and mutant dens. The KaySee Undertrace, a deep maglev tunnel network, serves as both hideout and battleground. Above ground, the Skyspire Ruins mark the old financial district—now home to rogue drones and ghost signals.
St. Louis Crater Zone
Not much more than a fused scar across the Mississippi, but still draws artifact hunters and suicidal prospectors seeking hidden pre-Sundering vaults. Radioactive fallout storms still blow west on certain days. Survivors whisper of “the voice in the crater,” suspected to be a rogue signal from a buried deep-data node.
Omaha Sprawl
Fortified by the Ironheads, a junker-militia that runs the Sprawl’s train lines and controls access to deep metro tunnels. Highly defensive and skilled in reclaiming tech. Entry requires trade tribute or pre-arranged escort.
Des Moines Reclaim
Nature dominates this city. The Green Coil Cult uses bio-luminescent algae and overgrown spore-vines to maintain a hybrid city-forest. Outsiders are welcomed only if unarmed and deemed "in rhythm." Their rejection of metal and cybernetics is aggressive.
The Koo (University of Kansas Ruins – Lawrence, KS)
Now a sacred site to loreseekers and Free Rangers. The old campus grounds are protected by the Koo Circle, a coalition of mutant sages, rogue scholars, and spiritualists. Hidden libraries and vaults are said to contain intact Pre-Sundering texts and maps. The area is considered neutral ground.
Denver Expanse (Northeastern Colorado)
On the surface, it's a ruined sprawl of wind-blasted wreckage. Below and within, however, lies the true threat—The Denver Intelligence, a sentient AI network that seized control of military infrastructure. Operating via robotic proxies, it hunts "intelligent organics" and processes them for pattern extraction. Local scavvers call the hunted zones The Harvest Fields.
🛣️ Caravan Routes and Trade Arteries
I-70: The Wind Road
Main artery between Denver and St. Louis, cutting through Salina, Topeka, KaySee. Frequently patrolled by TTG convoys and raided by nomadic groups. Near Lawrence, Free Rangers offer temporary protection in exchange for trade or information.
I-35: The Spine
Vertical trade route running from Des Moines to Wichita. In Wichita, the Redline Market acts as a black market exchange point. Ambushes by Horsemen of the Apocalypse are common in the southern stretches.
I-29/I-80: The Frost & Bone Route
Northern corridor stretching from Cheyenne to Des Moines. Rarely used except by armored supply trains or Nomad convoys due to frost rifts and rogue Mech-hounds rumored to be old military assets corrupted by Denver Intelligence.
⚔️ Hostile Forces & Hazards
-
Horsemen of the Apocalypse – Mutant warlords mounted on bikes and off-road vehicles. Operate like a thundering warband. Each “Horse” chapter (War, Famine, Pestilence, Death) controls part of Kansas/Nebraska routes. Engage in raids, destruction, and dominance rituals.
-
Denver Intelligence (Rogue AI) – Hunts intelligent life in Colorado’s eastern corridor. Deploys scouts, drones, and surgically-precise ambush teams.
-
Empire of Mankind (Western Division) – Engaged in "cleansing missions" through Missouri and southern Iowa. Clashes with Free Rangers are common near the Osage Plains.
-
Sporeblight Zones (North Missouri & Iowa) – Bio-contaminated forests with fungal mutants, airborne spore clouds, and warped animals. Hostile even to machines.
-
Cryo Rifts (Iowa-Nebraska Border) – Unstable subterranean cryo-weapons remain active in ruins. Sudden microblizzards and frost eruptions have wiped entire caravans.
-
Stormfront Corridor (KS High Plains) – Unpredictable supercell lightning storms born from malfunctioning Pre-Sundering climate mod towers. Navigated only by those with weather-scrying tech or TTG scouts.
🤝 Friendly Factions and Neutral Zones
Free Rangers
Nomadic guardians of the plains. Mutant humans and uplifted animals who respect natural harmony but embrace advanced tools of defense. They guide caravans, protect the Koo, and fight both Empire and Horsemen. Symbol: stylized buffalo skull with wind-ribbons.
Horsemen of the Apocalypse (Hostile)
Despite their violence, they sometimes negotiate for fuel, parts, and medicine—usually under a white-flag truce. Each Horseman group is a war-tribe with its own customs.
Rustwalker Collective
Tinker clans that navigate ruins like KaySee and Omaha. Known for barter in lost tech and advanced repair services. Frequently in conflict with Empire scouts and Horsemen scavengers.
Transcontinental Transport Group (TTG)
Maintains fortified stops along I-70 and I-35. Runs mobile convoys with mechanized escorts. Recruits locals as trail scouts and guides—often from among the Free Rangers.
The Seekers
Spiritual nomads who tend safehouses hidden along ley lines and ancient military bunkers. Offer psychic readings, medical aid, or navigational charts in exchange for relics, tech, or prophecy.
🏕️ Safe Harbors & Trade Zones
-
Fort Junction (Salina, KS): Central hub on I-70. Heavily fortified TTG-run enclave with full market services and resupply.
-
The Koo (Lawrence, KS): Knowledge sanctuary. Protected and isolated. Known to grant sanctuary to injured travelers, scholars, or mutants fleeing persecution.
-
Redline Market (Wichita, KS): Vibrant night-bazaar run by mutants, salvagers, and renegades. Half-legal, half-lawless, and dangerous to outsiders without escort.
-
Crater Bastion (St. Joseph, MO): Subterranean stronghold beneath a collapsed federal compound. Known for encryption specialists and deep data dealers.
-
Echo Station (Cheyenne, WY): Fringe traders and rogue synths commune here. One of the few places where tech and mutant interests align.
