🌍 Overview

The Cumberland Sector is a sprawling, fractured region at the southeastern edge of the former United States. Extending from the fortified arcology of Manfist in the west to the broken highlands of the Smokey Mountains, and from the contested corridors of Mashville southward to the Gulf Coast, it is a land of crumbling infrastructure, boiling conflict, and competing agendas.

Nominally claimed by the Empire of Mankind, the sector exists in a state of decentralized anarchy. The Empire projects strength through maps and broadcasts, but its forces are fragmented and embattled. Most of the sector is a no-man’s-land of autonomous militias, mutant insurgents, and independent enclaves.

🛡️ Imperial Oversight (In Name Only)

🦅 Governor Blackthorn

  • Based in Chi-Town, hundreds of miles away from the front.
  • Officially holds the title of Sector Steward, but his influence is largely symbolic.
  • Known to local troops as “The Rear With the Gear”—a dig at his distance and bureaucracy.
  • His orders are often ignored, delayed, or openly contradicted by frontline commanders who consider themselves the true authorities on the ground.

⚔️ Imperial Forces on the Ground

Despite fragmentation, the Empire maintains a military presence in key nodes throughout the Cumberland Sector. However, loyalty to Blackthorn is tenuous at best:

  • 179th Guards Powered Infantry Rifle Regiment – Hardened veterans stationed south of Battlezone 48, frequently operate independently.
  • Beta Cohort, 1st Airborne Legion – Rapid deployment and urban clearing specialists, view Blackthorn’s leadership with disdain.
  • Order of the Claw – Deep ops and internal purgers who report to Blackthorn only when convenient.
  • Purified Ones – Unofficial religious extremists tolerated by the Empire, utterly beyond Blackthorn’s control.

Infighting, insubordination, and local power struggles are common. Each base or Legion commander often functions as a petty warlord, feuding with peers and exploiting Blackthorn’s distance.

🏙️ Key Independent Strongholds

Manfist

  • Ruled by local leaders, fiercely independent and fortified.
  • No loyalty to the Empire or Blackthorn.
  • Home to the Guardians of Manfist, a disciplined paramilitary group enforcing its own laws.
  • Will negotiate, but from a position of strength.

Mashville / New Promise

  • A trade capital and neutral stronghold.
  • Controlled by the Council of Stewards, with major influence from the Transcontinental Transport Group (TTG).
  • Welcomes no Imperial oversight, maintains its own standing force and treaties.

⚠️ Volatile Zones & Wild Territories

Battlezone 48

  • A pulverized deadland of broken bunkers, minefields, and scorched warframes.
  • Scene of a failed Imperial siege turned war of attrition.
  • Now a three-way hotspot:
    • Volunteers Legion harassing Imperial lines.
    • Cumberland Clan mutants ambushing supply routes.
    • Beta Cohort command holding static bunkers and launching retaliatory airstrikes.

‘Lanta (Old Atlanta)

  • An irradiated mutant capital and feral tech haven.
  • Empire lost control here decades ago—those who remain are outlaws or ghosts.
  • Now partially under the influence of the Uncorrupted and war-tech scavengers.
  • Dangerous AI relics and forbidden bioweapons still linger.

🧠 Political Landscape

  • The Empire has lost practical control over the region. Only Blackthorn and central propaganda channels claim otherwise.
  • Local Imperial commanders often act autonomously, forming “mini-dictatorships” backed by firepower and reinforced bunkers.
  • Volunteers Legion, TTG, Cumberland Clan, and Manfist all function as competing powers—sometimes collaborating, more often clashing.

🗣️ Languages & Dialects

  • English – Primary lingua franca
  • Chinese, German – Often heard in Imperial units or industrial enclaves
  • French, Spanish – Spoken among riverfolk, bayou clans, and resistance cells
  • Spenamese / Spengalese – Mutant dialects and wasteland trade pidgins

🧭 Summary

The Cumberland Sector is a powder keg. The Empire clings to its claim in name only, while Governor Blackthorn issues hollow orders from Chi-Town, increasingly viewed as irrelevant. On the ground, independent powers control the flow of food, weapons, and loyalty.

It is a place where maps lie, borders shift, and survival means choosing your alliances carefully.
