Crimeria is the Frozen Northlands of Pangaia, a vast, unforgiving landscape dominated by towering, ice-capped mountains and massive, slow-moving glaciers. The climate is intensely severe, defined by long, dark winters and endless fields of snow and rock. Geographically, it occupies the northernmost portion of Pangaia, acting as a natural, nearly impenetrable boundary to the north.
Unique or Unusual Aspects: The Minotaur capital is Labyrinthus Cor Meum, The Heart of all labyrinths, which also serves as the capital of all Crimeria. One major settlement, Frostfang Hold, is a fortress carved directly into the side of a massive glacier, utilizing the natural ice for defense and warmth. The Goatkin’s City of the Moon is a tiered settlement on the steepest mountainsides, built within a dome-like stone formation that shines a pearlescent light in the moonlight. The region's unique geological pressure and ancient frozen earth are the source of all Gem Magic in Pangaia.
Races Native to Region
- Winter Folk: Their home is Frostfang Hold. Their Eldvar is named Klaus.
- Mamothfolk: They live in Furry Cliff. Their Eldvar is named Stonehide (Eldvar of resilient strength and frozen earth).
- Goatkin: They reside in the City of the Moon. Their Eldvar is the Crafter God Serene.
- Minotaur: They inhabit the capital, Labyrinthus Cor Meum. Their Eldvar is the Crafter God Phrank.
Nonnative Races that are Common
Due to the harsh climate and the region's defensibility, nonnative races are rare, but occasionally one might find hardy Bearfolk (from Wendertara) who share an appreciation for resourcefulness, or desperate Ratfolk (from Wendertara) seeking hidden tunnels and warmer pockets.
Race Relations
Relations are built on mutual respect for survival in a harsh environment. While each race is fiercely autonomous, they recognize the necessity of occasional cooperation, particularly during the brutal deep winter. The Minotaur hold a position of nominal authority through their capital's designation, but true leadership is often localized and based on seasonal needs.
Social Dynamic
The region is a collection of four distinct, self-governing tribal groups centered around their main settlements and guided by their respective Eldvar. There is a powerful emphasis on clan ties and respect for age and proven hardiness.
Crimerians are typically reserved, direct, and pragmatic. They treat each other with the stoic familiarity of fellow survivors. Outsiders are met with caution and suspicion, judged immediately on their utility and their respect for the land. Warm hospitality is rare, but if an outsider is in genuine distress or demonstrates capability, they will usually be afforded the basic necessities of survival to the harsh climate.
Outsider Trials: All visitors must first survive a month on their own in the harsh climate.
Babba Horns: Those who survive the month are dubbed Babba Horns. Minotaurs gift all Babba Horns a special sapphire coin, nicknamed Blue Blanket. This is a magical coin that gifts outsiders with resistance to the harsh climate. After being dubbed Babba Horns, the outsider is considered a minotaur and welcome to visit; they must always carry their Blue Blanket when traveling in Crimeria. Almost no minotaur would be hostile to them.
Melters: Minotaurs rarely offer help to struggling outsiders, but at times will intervene if they see an outsider near death. These saved foreigners are marked with a melting snowflake sigil, only seen by minotaur magic, and are called Melters. Melters are often not allowed back in Crimeria, being considered too weak to survive the harsh lands on their own. It is rare for a Melter to ever lose their mark and earn the title of Babba Horns.
Culture and Society
Fashion and Language
- Dress and Adornment: Clothing is primarily thick, insulating layers made from hardened hides, wools, and Mamothfolk fur. Utility is paramount. The dominant colors are muted whites, grays, and deep blues to blend with the landscape. Tattoos are common, often intricate patterns of swirling ice, mountains, or symbolic hunting marks done in dark blue ink. The Goatkin favor heavy silver jewelry, while the Minotaur wear ritualistic bone or tusk piercings. Small, uncut Gem Magic crystals are sometimes worn as vital adornment or protection amulets, symbolizing the wearer's access to the land's power.
- Language(s): The primary language is North Tongue, a guttural, efficient language with minimal flourish. They speak slowly and deliberately, often pausing for long moments of contemplation before answering.
- Hairstyles: Goatkin and Mamothfolk wear their thick hair in complex, tightly braided styles to keep it from impeding movement in the wind. Winter Folk prefer functional, close-cropped cuts.
Calendar, Holidays, and Observances
- The Long Vigil (Midwinter): The most sacred observance. A week of near-total darkness where each race retreats into its central dwelling to share preserved food and tell stories of ancestors, strength, and survival. It is a time for paying homage to the power of the cold.
- The Stonehide Thaw (Spring Equinox): Celebrated by the Mamothfolk, marking the moment the snow begins to break. It involves large gatherings, feasting, and competitive feats of strength to prove their hardiness endured the winter.
- The Eldvar Run: An annual, non-competitive trek between the main settlements, undertaken by young adults to test their mettle, deliver important messages, and reinforce regional ties.
Religion
- Founders: The Minotaur and Goatkin were created by the Crafter Gods, Eldvar Pharek and Serene. After the Minotaurs and Goatkin were born, they quickly set about settling Crimeria.
- Dominant Religion: The religion is based on reverence for the Eldvar of their respective races and the overwhelming power of the frozen land itself. They practice a form of animism mixed with ancestor worship, seeing the cold, the ice, and the earth as the true deities.
- Priesthood Power: The Priesthood is decentralized. Each Eldvar has a small circle of devoted shamans and mystics. These mystics are the exclusive conservators and practitioners of the native Gem Magic tradition, guarding its secrets. Their power is local but highly influential, particularly in matters of seasonal rituals, healing, and interpreting the will of the Eldvar.
Art
- High Art: Consists of Ice-Sculpture, ephemeral works carved into the glaciers or large ice blocks, meant to be appreciated for their temporary nature before they melt or shift. The creation of finely cut and magically activated Gem Magic foci is the pinnacle of High Art and considered a sacred craft.
- Folk Art: Bone Carving and Tusk Inlay are prevalent, especially among the Minotaur and Mamothfolk, depicting hunting scenes, ancestor portraits, and the swirling patterns of snow and wind.
- Music: Often mournful, low chanting accompanied by deep, resonating drums made of stretched hide, designed to be heard across vast, open distances.
- Architecture: Focuses on integration with the natural environment (glaciers and caves) and extreme fortification.
Taboo and Traditions
- Taboo: Wasting resources, especially fuel or food, is a severe cultural crime. Defacing the ice or the mountain is also forbidden, as they are viewed as living entities. The reckless or unsanctioned mining of Gem Magic crystals is an offense punishable by exile.
- Tradition: The Oath of the Tusks (Mamothfolk and Minotaur) - A blood-oath sworn between two individuals to ensure mutual protection during a journey, sealed by breaking a small piece of tusk or horn.
Laws and Leadership of Region
Leadership is primarily handled by a council of the four Eldvar, Phrank (Minotaur), Klaus (Winter Folk), Stonehide (Mamothfolk), and Serene (Goatkin), who meet in the capital, Labyrinthus Cor Meum. Local laws are upheld by the clan leaders and shamans.
Laws Governing Magic
Magic is viewed with caution. Gem Magic is the most respected magical tradition and its practice is heavily regulated by the Eldvar Council. Only sanctioned mystics are allowed to handle the raw crystals or teach the true practice of Gem Magic. Brown Magic is the most common form of general utility magic, focused on earthen and natural wards. Reckless or destructive magic that could cause an avalanche or an early melt (especially any unsanctioned Gem Magic) is severely punished.
Servants and Landholders
The concept of land ownership is fluid; the land belongs to the clans. There are no serfs or slaves. All able-bodied adults are considered free contributors to their respective clans, with duties assigned based on skill and ability.
Alliances
Crimeria is highly isolationist. Their few potential alliances are based on strategic necessity:
- The Wandering Shell: This organization has set up outposts in some parts of the country and roads.
- Feather Court: A necessary, if cautious, alliance to secure limited supplies and information from the south, as the Featherkin can fly over the treacherous terrain.
- Zuprana (Guild Empire): Limited trade for specialized goods that cannot be found in the North, often in exchange for raw Gem Magic crystals.
Politics and Social Structure
The political structure is a Stratified Tribal Confederacy. Power flows from the individual clans to the Eldvar, who then form the ruling council.
Influential Power Groups
- The Eldvar Council: The official ruling body, primarily concerned with defense, resource allocation, and control over the Gem Magic supply.
- The Clan Shamanic Circles: Highly influential groups who interpret the spiritual health of the land and dictate when and where to hunt or gather. They are the gatekeepers of Gem Magic knowledge. Their counsel often overrides even the Eldvar on traditional matters.
- The Frost-Wardens: The elite, highly-trained Minotaur and Mamothfolk warriors responsible for patrolling the perimeters and guarding the major settlements, acting as the region's central military defense.
Interest and influence with world
Crimeria has very little interest and influence with the rest of the world, but the world has a vested interest in Crimeria due to the origin of Gem Magic. Their goal is internal stability and survival. Rulers and dignitaries achieve their goals through stoic negotiation and the calculated deployment of their formidable, frightening reputation. They prefer silence and deterrence over active diplomacy, only opening the borders when necessary to trade Gem Magic crystals for essential imports.
Economy of Region
· Export: Gem Magic Crystals (raw or minimally cut), Preserved Meats and Ice-Metals, Mamothfolk Hides, and carved ivory/bone, and ultra-hardened ice-metal alloys (often Brown Magic infused).
- Import: Refined wood, certain types of salt, processed magical components from other traditions (non-Gem Magic), and alcohol.
- Taxes: Taxes are taken in the form of contributions of labor or essential goods (a percentage of a hunt, a portion of gathered supplies).
- Local Resources: Ice, stone, geothermal pockets, Mamothfolk fur/ivory, and the unique crystalline deposits for Gem Magic.
- Merchant Influence: Merchants and traders have minimal influence and are generally treated as necessary evils for bringing in specific imports.
Currency System
Crimeria primarily relies on barter. For large-scale trade, they use exceptionally large, perfectly cut hexagonal Ice-Gems (naturally occurring, but non-magical, crystals) that hold value due to their extreme scarcity outside the North. However, raw Gem Magic crystals are the primary trade commodity when dealing with major external Guilds or kingdoms.
Gaps in Economic Classes
While there are no poor or rich in the conventional sense, gaps exist based on proven resilience and contribution to the clan's survival. The Shamans and Eldvar who control access to the Gem Magic sources hold the greatest economic and political power.
Military and Guilds
- Military Presence: Crimeria has a central military known as the Frost-Wardens (the Minotaur/Mamothfolk collaboration), which acts as a strategic reserve and border patrol. Most defense is handled by a fierce, well-trained militia system within each clan, where every adult is expected to be proficient in combat.
- Reliance: They rely heavily on their clan militias and the inhospitable terrain for defense. They do not use mercenaries, viewing them as unreliable.
- Magic in Military: Magic is primarily defensive and strategic. Winter Folk mages use controlled frost and ice magic to build temporary fortifications and summon elemental support. Frost-Wardens often use Gem Magic-infused weaponry or armor for enhanced defense and combat prowess.
- Guilds: The only widely accepted "guild" is Crimson Ring a Guild founded by Minotaur, they run Colosseums throughout the known world. Gem Carvers guilds are respected but there are many collectives through the country.
Overview of the Land
- Flora, Fauna, and Weather: Flora is sparse, consisting mainly of hearty lichen, mosses, and deep-rooted, slow-growing pines. Fauna includes mammoths, saber-toothed cats, gigantic white wolves, and rare, cold-resistant flightless birds. Weather is defined by blizzards, high winds, and bone-numbing cold.
- Uncivilized Humanoids: Primitive, aggressive Ice Trolls and Cold-Warped Gnolls live in the deepest mountain caves, preying on isolated travelers.
- Effect on Populace: The geography makes them highly land-bound, defensive, and resourceful. They are forced to be masters of navigating dangerous cliffs and internal trails.
Unique Features or Landmarks
- The Glacier-Wall: The massive glacier into which Frostfang Hold is carved, an ever-shifting wall of blue ice thousands of feet high.
- The Black-Ice Labyrinth: The complex natural cavern system surrounding Labyrinthus Cor Meum, which is magically and geographically baffling to non-Minotaur. It is rumored to contain the deepest, most potent Gem Magic vein in all of Pangaia.
- The Whispering Caves: A network of geothermal caves that provide warmth and are considered holy sites of the Winter Folk, where the wind sounds like ancestor spirits.
Notable Towns and Cities
- Labyrinthus Cor Meum (Capital): Minotaur capital. Built to confuse and deter invaders, a maze of stone and ice. It houses the central vault and processing facilities for Crimeria's Gem Magic.
- Frostfang Hold: Winter Folk fortress carved into a glacier.
- Furry Cliff: Mamothfolk settlement of cave and tusk structures.
- City of the Moon: Goatkin tiered homes and paths on steep mountainsides.
Main Routes and Transportation
- Main Routes: Routes are treacherous, mainly consisting of winding, marked mountain trails that are only traversable during the "summer" months. The most important route is the Eldvar Path connecting the four main settlements.
- Transportation: Primarily large, powerful sleds pulled by domesticated snow-beasts, or Goatkin-guided mountain paths.
Villains
- The Ice-Witch Varg (Winter Folk): A powerful ex-shaman who rejected the Eldvar Council and now leads a small band of Cold-Warped Gnolls. She actively sabotages the annual hunts and is rumored to be in league with a "Shadow Voice" (Misery's agent) to bring about the eternal winter, using corrupted Gem Magic.
