The Empire

UPDATE: Nevea and the younger gods overthrew the old gods 4000 years ago, and established the human race as especially under their protection. Thus was born the Empire, which is the longest lasting human government in the history of the World of Gordovia.

In the first 3000 years, the Empire grew, starting out at the Capital Northern Star, and growing north, west, east, and south from there.

Starting 1000 years ago, the Empire began to fall on hard times. A new cult, the worship of Red Medea, was born in the Holy Land and soon the Prophetess' armies swept the lands beyond the Sea in the Middle of the World and conquered it all in a jihad that cut the size of the Empire in half.

500 years ago, the northern reaches of the Empire began to fall in on itself, and the province Aquila seized control of the Western continent and conquered surrounding provinces.

80 years ago, Red King John conquered the province Calithornia and renamed it Gordovia, and declared himself an independent king, not even an ally of the Empire.

Complicating matters was the new Ator religion, which swept the southern portions of the Empire, alienating the outer provinces which remained loyal to the storm god Nevea. The religious war between the Ator Church and the Nevea Church tore the Empire further, pitting brother against brother and father against son.

Now, the Empire is reduced to a rump of what it was, in what is now called the Southern Empire. However, under the enlightened influence of the lawful good Ator religion, the Southern Empire is enjoying a Rennaisance. However, this can only be a temporary reprieve. The forces that have been folding up the Empire for 1000 years are still in play, and the Southern Empire may last a few hundred more years, but ultimately it will fall like the rest.
