Fieflands

The Fieflands are unusual in the Kingdom of Aquila in that they are a place of peace and plenty, ruled with a light hand, with low taxation and minimal interference from the crown. This was a concession the Lords of the Fiefland won, in return for a royal decree that they may not build castles, keeps, or even city walls. The Lords of the Fieflands, however, organize the people in well-trained militias. The people of the Fieflands are proud of their favored position in Aquila, and will gladly fight to maintain it. The Aquilan Army know that in the Fieflands, they cannot get away with their usual cruelty to the people, for in the Fieflands the people do not consider themselves lowly serfs, but armed citizens with rights as against the crown. Every man in the Fieflands, from the age of 16 to 55, knows how to fight and owns a sword and a bow.
