Haunted Hall is so named because it is haunted by its former master, and his family. The master, Baron Aaron Lockjaw, was a devout man who pledged to tithe his earnings to the Nevean Church. When Dead Man's Swamp grew in size, his crops began to fail, but the Nevean Church still demanded the same tithe as before. Baron Lockjaw got deeper and deeper in debt, but the Nevean Church relentlessly pursued collection.

Finally, in desperation, Baron Lockjaw slew his family and himself to avoid paying the debt. However, the Nevean Church still tracks the debt at 100,000 gp, which the next owner will have to pay at 5,000, once in spring, once in autumn, for 30 years. Baron Leviathan Seabarrow has assumed that debt, and has been promised that he will be burned as a heretic if he misses any payments.
