Threre are multiple river forts, most of which are located in present day Egypt; however, there are numerous forts in the Sudan, along the Nile and White Nile.

Constructed during the Old Kingdom Era, these forts have served as protectors to traders coming from the gold mines of the south.

Given the long history of Egypt it is not unusual for them to have created so many forts. What is unusual is the pristine condition of so many forts and their value today.
