Northwest Faerun Mountain Range

02/11/25The Spine of the World is a vast mountain range that dominates the northwest region of Faerun, stretching from the frigid coastline of the Cold Run, near the Sea of Moving Ice, to the Ice Spires north of the Silver Marches. To the people of the Savage Frontier and Silver Marches, particularly those in Scornubel, this range is known simply as "the Wall." On the bleakest winter days, when the snow-covered peaks merge with the iron-gray, sunless sky, the mountains appear as though they are holding up the heavens themselves.
The Spine of the World serves as a natural shield, separating the civilizations of the North from the frozen wastelands of the Uttermost North, which encompasses the Reghed Glacier and the Endless Ice Sea. To many in Faerun, the Spine is an unbroken, nearly impassable expanse of jagged peaks, towering cliffs, and treacherous ice fields. Only the most determined and hardy souls dare to traverse its perilous terrain. While the westernmost reaches of the range are pierced by a hazardous trade route leading to Icewind Dale, the remainder of the Spine is largely unexplored, its icy slopes and hidden valleys untouched by all but the hardiest adventurers, exiles, and monstrous denizens.
The peaks of the Spine are among the tallest in Faerun, with some exceeding 20,000 feet in height. Snow and ice cling to all but the smallest mountains year-round, forming dangerous glaciers and deadly avalanches that can wipe away entire expeditions in an instant. The range is notorious for its ferocious winter storms, where blizzards can last for days, and bitter winds cut through even the thickest furs.
Among the most well-known landmarks in the Spine are the Four Sisters, a quartet of eerily similar peaks known as Firstpeak, Secondpeak, Thirdpeak, and Fourthpeak. These mountains, nearly identical in height, form an imposing line, their jagged crowns standing in silent, frozen vigilance over the northern wastes.
Despite its unforgiving nature, the Spine is not entirely devoid of life. The northern slopes, though barren for much of the year, hold enough hardy evergreens that the loggers of Ten-Towns risk frequent journeys across the tundra to harvest timber. These loggers brave not only the elements but also the lurking dangers of the mountains—frost giants, remorhaz, white dragons, and other formidable creatures that claim these heights as their domain.
The southern slopes, known as the Lands Against the Wall, are marginally more hospitable, benefiting from proximity to the Druarwood and Moonwood forests. These regions harbor scattered settlements, hidden outposts, and old, forgotten ruins swallowed by time and snow. Despite the challenges, those who call the Spine of the World home—whether barbarian tribes, exiled warriors, or reclusive hermits—are among the toughest and most resilient people in all of Faerun.
