The Western Heartlands

The Western Heartlands is a vast, open region of rolling plains, rugged hills, and scattered forests, lying at the crossroads of Faerûn’s great civilizations. A land of both boundless freedom and constant peril, it is home to independent city-states, bold adventurers, and warring factions, all struggling to carve their destinies from its untamed wilderness.

Often called the “Breadbasket of Faerun”, the Western Heartlands is known for its fertile farmland, which supports a thriving agricultural economy. Yet, despite its bounty, the region remains notorious for its lawlessness. With no central government to enforce stability, power is contested by city-states, noble houses, mercenary companies, and would-be conquerors. Meanwhile, in the untamed spaces between settlements, bandits, monsters, and exiles roam freely, preying on the weak or seeking their own fortunes.

The Western Heartlands stretch across a broad expanse of diverse terrain, bounded by:

• The Sea of Swords (west): Bustling port cities such as Baldur’s Gate connect the region to the global trade network, attracting merchants, adventurers, and criminals alike.
• The Storm Horn Mountains (east): These towering peaks mark the westernmost extent of Cormyr’s influence, serving as a natural barrier between the heartlands and the Purple Dragon-led kingdom.
• The Lizard Marsh and Delimbiyr Vale (north): This frontier region encompasses the monster-infested wasteland of the High Moor, a remnant of ancient civilizations swallowed by time.
• The Lands of Intrigue (south): The Western Heartlands gradually transition into the more structured societies of Amn, Tethyr, and Calimshan, where centralized rule and trade guilds hold greater sway.

The region’s diverse landscapes include sweeping grasslands, ancient forests, and treacherous swamps, dotted with remnants of long-lost civilizations.
