Anauroch, The Great Sand Sea, is a vast magical desert in northern Faerun, shaped by cataclysmic events and ancient legacies. It occupies the remnants of the once-mighty Netherese Empire, a civilization known for its flying enclaves and mastery of magic. This empire fell when its greatest mage, Karsus, attempted to usurp the goddess Mystryl's divine mantle in a desperate bid to end the war against the phaerimm. This act caused the Weave—the fabric of magic—to falter, leading to catastrophic magical failure and the collapse of Netherese cities to the ground.

Since then, Anauroch has expanded relentlessly, engulfing bordering nations beneath its relentless sands. It is the largest desert in Faerun, divided into three distinct regions:

  • The High Ice (north): A frozen expanse of rocky terrain and the formidable Black Glacier, a stark and frigid landscape far removed from the typical desert image.
  • The Plain of Standing Stones (central): A dry, wind-swept plain dotted with jagged, weathered rocks, creating a harsh, barren landscape of gravel and stone.
  • The Sword (south): The classic hot, sandy desert, known for its relentless heat and shifting dunes.

Anauroch is bordered by the Silver Marches, the Savage Frontier, and Evereska to the west; Cormyr and the Dalelands to the south and southeast; and the Moonsea and the Ride to the east.

Despite its harshness, Anauroch is home to the nomadic Bedine tribes, who traverse the desert in search of scarce resources and oases. Additionally, a small Zhentarim garrison patrols the Black Road, a vital trade route winding from the ruins of Teshendale to Llorkh in the Graypeak Mountains. Another notable group, the D'tarig, are diminutive people living along the desert's borders, interacting occasionally with neighboring cultures.
