Waterdeep, often called the City of Splendors or the Crown of the North, is arguably the most significant and influential city in the North and perhaps all of Faerun. Renowned for its cosmopolitan nature and cultural sophistication, Waterdeep attracts the most gifted artisans, artists, and scholars from across the Realms. It serves as a critical commercial hub, connecting financial interests along the Sword Coast and beyond, and stands as a bastion of power within the Lords' Alliance—a coalition of nations and city-states dedicated to maintaining order in the region.

Despite its geographic location 150 miles north of Daggerford along the Sword Coast North, Waterdeep is often included in the Western Heartlands due to its profound influence and metropolitan prominence. The city claims dominion over the surrounding lands for about 100 miles beyond its walls, and its well-paved, heavily patrolled roads ensure safe passage for travelers and merchants alike.

Waterdeep's history is deeply intertwined with the ancient elven settlement of Aelinthaldaar, upon whose ruins the city was built. The city sprawls northward from the sea along the slopes of Mount Waterdeep, which was once the domain of the Melairkyn, a mithral-mining dwarven clan. The mountain itself is honeycombed with ancient passages and tunnels, many of which predate the city's founding and are now home to dangerous creatures. Beneath the city lies the legendary Undermountain, a sprawling dungeon complex that has long lured adventurers with its mysteries and treasures. Conveniently close to Waterdeep's taverns and temples, these explorers find respite and aid nearby, adding to the city's bustling economy and reputation as a hub for adventurers.

Waterdeep is governed by a sixteen-member council known as the Lords of Waterdeep, most of whom maintain their anonymity by wearing magical masks called the Lord's Helm. This secrecy ensures impartial governance, though the identities of the Lords are a frequent topic of speculation among nobles and common folk alike. The city thrives on this intrigue, with the Lords themselves often spreading rumors to obscure the truth, turning their identities into an ever-changing enigma.
