Region of Northwest Faerun

The Frozenfar is the most inhospitable and remote region of the North, defined by its extreme cold, relentless storms, and sparse population. Stretching from the Spine of the World to the Sea of Moving Ice, and from Icewind Dale to the Cold Run, it is a land where winter never loosens its grip. Those who live here—barbarians, dwarves, trappers, and wanderers—must be as unyielding as the land itself.

The term "Frozenfar" is fluid, its meaning shifting based on who speaks it.

  • In the southern lands, such as Amn and the Inner Sea, Frozenfar is used to describe everything north of Mirabar, including the Spine of the World and its mountain passes.
  • Among the northern peoples, Frozenfar refers only to the lands north of the Spine, where survival is a daily struggle against nature's fury.
  • Some travelers and scholars use Frozenfar to encompass all lands where a traveler could freeze to death on the road—a definition that extends well beyond any map’s borders.

Cold Run

A vast, barren tundra west of the Iron Trail, stretching from the Iceflow River in the south to the Shaengarne in the north. Few settle here, save for wandering tribes of Reghed barbarians and hardened hunters seeking game in the icy wastes.

Icewind Dale

A windswept tundra, named for the howling, freezing gales that descend from the mountain of Kelvin's Cairn. Icewind Dale is known for its harsh winters, nomadic tribes, and the hardy settlers of Ten-Towns, who eke out an existence in the icy wilderness.

Northeast Trackless Sea

A cold and perilous ocean littered with icebergs, sunken wrecks, and unknown horrors. Only the bravest or most desperate sailors venture into these waters, which may hide undiscovered islands, lost relics, or even passages to deeper, darker realms.

Sea of Moving Ice

The waters north of the Cold Run and west of Icewind Dale are densely filled with hundreds of shifting icebergs and a number of frozen isles. It is sparsely populated and accommodated with a handful of landmarks and few inhabitants, like ice trolls and tribes of Ice Hunters.

Spine of the World

By most accounts, the Spine of the World mountains encompass the southern reaches of the Frozenfar, separating the whole of the region from the warmer lands to the south.
