Longsaddle is a quaint yet significant hamlet along the Long Road in the Savage Frontier of northwest Faerûn. Though small in size, it boasts a reputation far greater than its modest population suggests, largely due to the Harpell family, a lineage of eccentric but immensely powerful wizards. The influence of the Harpells has secured Longsaddle’s membership in the Lords’ Alliance, with Dowell Harpell acting as the hamlet’s official representative on the council.

Situated between the Crags to the west and the Evermoors to the east, Longsaddle occupies an isolated stretch of the Long Road. The rolling grasslands surrounding the settlement provide fertile pastures that sustain a thriving ranching community, known for its hardy livestock and quality horses. The Long Road itself ensures that the hamlet remains connected to trade routes, though it is far removed from the bustling commerce of cities like Neverwinter or Waterdeep.

Longsaddle was founded in 1042 DR by Shardra Harpell, an escaped Calishite slave who sought to create a sanctuary of freedom and learning. With her mastery of magic and leadership, she laid the foundation for both the Harpell family legacy and the hamlet’s enduring stability. Over the centuries, Longsaddle remained a bastion of strange yet benevolent wizardry, as generations of Harpells expanded their arcane influence.

While the hamlet proper is home to around 130 permanent residents, the surrounding farms, ranches, and homesteads bring the total population to over 1,100. The community is primarily composed of ranchers, farmers, and tradesfolk, many of whom rely on the Harpells for protection against the dangers of the wilds.

Despite its rustic charm, Longsaddle is no ordinary village. The presence of the Harpell wizards ensures that strange magical phenomena are a common occurrence—talking animals, wandering animated objects, and unexpected bursts of arcane energy are all part of daily life. Visitors are often bewildered by these oddities, though the locals have long since learned to take them in stride.

To outsiders, Longsaddle may seem like an ordinary ranching village, but those who linger quickly realize it is anything but. Talking horses, teleporting chickens, and oddly behaving furniture are just as likely to be encountered as hardworking ranchers and skilled blacksmiths.

While its remote location ensures that few pass through without purpose, those who do often find themselves enthralled—or bewildered—by the hamlet’s magical quirks. Whether seeking refuge, trade, or arcane knowledge, Longsaddle stands as a peculiar yet enduring beacon of civilization in the untamed North.
