The Sword Coast North is a vast and rugged expanse along the northwestern coast of Faerun, defined by its untamed wilderness, towering mountain ranges, and windswept shores. It is a land where civilization clings to the edges of a harsh and unforgiving frontier, with settlements that have long endured the perils of monsters, raiders, and the relentless forces of nature.

The region stretches from the Spine of the World mountains in the north—an impassable, ice-crowned barrier that separates Faerun from the frozen Uttermost North—to the great city of Waterdeep in the south, often considered the gateway between the wilder lands and the more civilized territories beyond. To the west, the Sea of Swords crashes against the rocky coastline, shaping the trade routes and livelihoods of many coastal towns. To the east, the Long Road, a vital overland trade route, winds through the frontier, linking scattered settlements with the more stable lands of the Savage Frontier and Silver Marches.

This region is defined by craggy hills, dense ancient forests, and the ever-present dangers of its wild terrain. The forests, such as the Neverwinter Wood and Kryptgarden Forest, are home to fey creatures, old druidic enclaves, and hidden ruins of bygone civilizations. The rolling hills and rocky outcroppings harbor everything from goblin tribes and roving orc warbands to dragon lairs and remnants of Netherese magic.

Despite its harshness, the Sword Coast North is home to a network of resilient towns and cities, each bound together by the common goal of survival. The most prominent of these have formed the Lords' Alliance, a powerful coalition of rulers and leaders dedicated to maintaining order, protecting trade routes, and repelling external threats. This alliance fosters cooperation among the cities and fortifies their defenses against the dangers lurking in the frontier.

Among the key settlements in the region:

  • Neverwinter – The Jewel of the North, a thriving city built upon the heat of an underground chasm, boasting a strong economy and a proud martial tradition.
  • Luskan – A lawless city of sailors and pirates, controlled by the infamous High Captains and influenced by the secretive Arcane Brotherhood.
  • Mirabar – A wealthy mining city located near the Spine of the World, where dwarven and human engineers extract valuable metals and gems.
  • Leilon – A fortified town south of Neverwinter, once ruined but now rebuilt as a strategic waypoint along the High Road.
