The Neverwinter River, known to the ancient dwarves as Nethlur, is a prominent waterway in the Sword Coast North of northwest Faerun, flowing directly through the city of Neverwinter. Originating from the volcanic Mount Hotenow deep within the Neverwinter Wood, the river ultimately empties into the Bay of Mists on the Sea of Swords.

As it winds through the Neverwinter Wood, the river is fed by several tributaries, including Berun's River, Edal's Creek, the Gibdraw, and the River Morgur. Its bright, crystal-clear waters run warm year-round, a phenomenon widely attributed to the geothermal heat generated by Mount Hotenow and the presence of fire elementals beneath the surface. This warmth extends beyond the riverbanks, creating a microclimate that keeps the surrounding area temperate, even in the harshest winters.

The river's warmth is vital to the region, preventing the city of Neverwinter and its harbor from freezing, thus allowing for year-round trade and travel. This unique feature is believed to have inspired the city's name, as it remains "never winter," regardless of the season.

Within Neverwinter, the river plays a central role, notably giving its name to the bustling River District. This vibrant area thrives on the river’s resources, contributing to the city's prosperity and charm. The Neverwinter River remains both a lifeline and a symbol, embodying the warmth and resilience of the Jewel of the North.
