The Trackless Sea is the boundless ocean that stretches westward from the continent of Faerun, encompassing an immense and uncharted expanse of deep blue waters. A realm of mystery and legend, it is named for its seemingly endless, pathless waters, where few natural landmarks or reliable routes exist to guide mariners. The Trackless Sea has been both a barrier and a bridge, separating the known lands of Toril from the unexplored territories beyond.

The Trackless Sea extends across a vast region, bordered by:

  • The Sea of Swords to the east, where the waters lap against the Sword Coast of Faerun, from Luskan in the north to Calimshan in the south.
  • Maztica, the fabled western continent, where the sea is known as Taylola or the Eastern Ocean by its native civilizations.
  • Anchorome, a land shrouded in mystery and myth, situated far to the northwest beyond Maztica.
  • The Sea of Moving Ice to the north, where the Trackless Sea gives way to glacier-choked waters inhabited by icebergs, frozen islands, and elusive sea creatures.
  • The Chultan Peninsula and the Shining Sea to the south, where the tropical waters become warmer, mingling with the currents from distant lands.

Despite its vastness, the Trackless Sea is not featureless. Hidden islands, reefs, and ruins dot its waters, remnants of civilizations lost to time. Sailors tell tales of storm-wracked atolls, floating isles, and sunken cities lurking beneath the waves.

Few dare to cross the Trackless Sea, for it is an expanse of open ocean fraught with peril. Those who navigate its waters include:

  • Faerunian Traders & Explorers – Merchant fleets from Waterdeep, Baldur’s Gate, and Calimshan venture westward, seeking riches and new trade routes. The famed Golden Legion of Amn once led expeditions to Maztica, marking the first significant Faerûnian contact with that distant land.
  • Maztican Seafarers – The native people of Maztica have long sailed the coastal waters of their homeland, though only the boldest venture across the deep ocean, driven by prophecy, necessity, or conquest.
  • Pirates & Privateers – The Trackless Sea harbors corsairs, smugglers, and marauding fleets, particularly along the Nelanthar Isles, where pirate lords prey upon merchant ships.
  • The Mysterious Isle of Evermeet – The elven sanctuary of Evermeet is hidden somewhere within the Trackless Sea, a secret and sacred realm where the last vestiges of elven glory endure. Its exact location is a closely guarded secret, protected by magical wards and formidable elven warships.

The vast, open waters ensure that few return from ill-fated journeys, their ships claimed by tempests, sea monsters, or the unknown.

Sailing the Trackless Sea is a treacherous endeavor, fraught with challenges that can turn a voyage into a nightmare. Unpredictable Storms and fierce tempests sweep across the sea without warning, capsizing vessels and scattering fleets. Sailor's whisper of the Tempest Maw, a vast, roaming hurricane that has raged for centuries. Rogue Waves & Maelstroms lurk in the open waters, swallowing ships whole. Some claim these phenomena are not natural but the work of angry gods or vengeful sea spirits. The deeps are home to terrifying leviathans, including the legendary kraken, whose tentacles have dragged entire ships into the abyss. Ghostly shipwrecks and lost civilizations lie beneath the waves, some said to be cursed, their spirits still wandering the depths. Without stars, landmarks, or reliable charts, many vessels find themselves lost, drifting aimlessly until supplies run dry. Even the most skilled navigators and seasoned captains tread carefully when daring to venture beyond the known waters.
