The Savage Frontier is a vast and rugged region in northwest Faerun, lying north of the Delimbiyr River. It excludes the Sword Coast North, the High Forest, and the former nation of Luruar, also known as the Silver Marches. In stark contrast to the grand and civilized cities found to the south and west, the Savage Frontier is a land of untamed wilderness, populated by scattered farmsteads, rough mining camps, logging settlements, and frontier outposts.

The region is temperate, though its weather can be harsh and unpredictable. Rolling hills, dense forests, and rocky highlands dominate the landscape, which is rich in natural resources, making it a prime target for both settlers and raiders alike. However, civilization has only ever made fleeting gains here; much of the land remains a dangerous, monster-haunted expanse where giants, orcs, trolls, and other deadly creatures roam freely.

The Savage Frontier is broadly divided into three greater regions:

  • The Delimbiyr Vale – This expansive valley follows the course of the Delimbiyr River, marking the eastern and southern borders of the High Forest. It is home to fertile farmland, hidden ruins, and long-forgotten strongholds. Once a thriving part of Eaerlann, an ancient elven kingdom, the Vale is now sparsely settled, with only a handful of villages and fortified steadings dotting its landscape.
  • The Fallen Lands – A hostile and desolate region, the Fallen Lands form a natural barrier between the Savage Frontier and the Anauroch Desert. These lands were devastated long ago by magical cataclysms and still bear the scars of arcane destruction. Twisted ruins, lingering wild magic, and restless undead make this a place few dare to tread.
  • The Dessarin Valley – A vast, fertile lowland stretching along the western edge of the High Forest, the Dessarin Valley is one of the more inhabitable parts of the Savage Frontier. The River Dessarin, a major waterway of the North, runs through this valley, supporting a handful of pioneer towns, fortified keeps, and trade posts. It has long been a contested land, frequently raided by orcs, bandits, and Uthgardt barbarians.
