02/03/25Massachusetts is a state struggling to hold on to the remnants of its past, torn apart by years of conflict, political instability, and increasingly dangerous street-level violence. The aftermath of the wars of 2021 and 2030 still echoes throughout the state, with many areas left scarred and barely functioning. While Boston remains a hub for commerce and culture, its days of glory feel distant. The state is fragmented, with shifting power dynamics and an underlying sense of lawlessness running through much of the population.
The Boston Metro Area
Boston, the beating heart of the state, still has a reputation as a major city—one of the few left standing in the region—but it’s not what it used to be. The once-proud urban center has become a battleground, where different factions compete for control of what little infrastructure remains intact. The city has also seen an influx of gangs and mercenary groups as the violence that plagued the surrounding suburbs after the 2021 conflict continues to spill into the streets.
The Urban Core: Despite the presence of military checkpoints and the city’s once-vaunted infrastructure, the heart of Boston is far from safe. After dark, the streets are ruled by various criminal organizations, some of which are aligned with corporate interests, while others act as independent players. The once-thriving downtown district is now a place where gangs like Hurricane, a notorious biker group, enforce their control over important trade routes and public spaces. They ride sleek, customized bikes, and their presence has turned the city’s roads into something resembling a battleground, with turf wars spilling over into the streets.
The Outskirts: In areas like South Boston, Charlestown, and and Roxbury, power is often in the hands of gangs, mercenaries, and corporate-backed enforcers. The neighborhoods are a far cry from the well-maintained districts that once stood as beacons of civic pride. The MBTA runs sporadically at best, and much of the city’s basic infrastructure—roads, utilities, and public buildings—are in disrepair. At night, the streets are barely navigable, with gangs enforcing curfews and charging tolls for safe passage through their territory.
Corporate Zones and Resilience: Corporate zones are heavily fortified, and life in these areas is far different from the chaos outside their walls. The wealthy and influential remain largely insulated from the worst of the violence, though even they cannot escape the simmering unrest in the rest of the city. Small pockets of organized resistance have formed in some of the outer districts, and communities in places like Jamaica Plain have banded together for mutual defense. These places rely heavily on informal networks for survival, often relying on barter systems and black-market trade to acquire necessities.
The Rest of Massachusetts
Outside of Boston, Massachusetts is an uneven mix of devastated cities, isolated rural communities, and areas that have essentially been abandoned to lawlessness.
Western Massachusetts: The more remote areas, such as Pittsfield and Northampton, have become home to militia groups, survivalists, and other factions seeking to escape the chaos of the cities. These groups often control key infrastructure such as old military installations or power plants, and some even offer protection to the locals in exchange for loyalty. The rural areas have also become breeding grounds for rumors of strange phenomena—unexplained disappearances, bizarre creatures in the woods, and unmarked military operations—though most people dismiss these stories as exaggerations.
The Cape and Islands: The once-thriving tourist hotspots of Cape Cod and the islands have become isolated territories, often governed by local militias or survivalist groups. These areas are self-sustaining to some extent but cut off from much of the rest of the state. The seas surrounding the islands have become more dangerous, with pirate-like groups using the water as a way to trade in contraband or smuggle people. The islands are also rumored to be home to secret military bunkers and caches of old-world technology, which attract scavengers and those seeking refuge from the violence in the cities.
Crime and Lawlessness
Crime has taken over large swaths of Massachusetts, particularly in the more urban areas. Gangs, both local and affiliated with larger criminal syndicates, have grown in power, controlling entire neighborhoods and trade routes. The rise of organized crime has meant that law enforcement struggles to maintain order, and vigilante justice is often the order of the day.
Street Gangs and Biker Gangs: Gangs like Hurricane, a large biker gang modeled after Japanese go-gangs, are the most visible face of crime in Boston. They rule the streets after dark, exacting tolls from anyone traveling through their turf and engaging in illegal trade—everything from drugs to stolen tech. Other gangs have emerged in places like Worcester and Lowell, each vying for power in the fractured state. They frequently clash over territory, and the line between criminal syndicates and corrupt corporations is often blurred.
Rising Tensions: Tensions between various factions are high. With law enforcement stretched thin and the military primarily focused on protecting the more important zones, local neighborhoods are left to fend for themselves. People have become used to the idea that survival comes down to which group can provide the best protection—whether that be a gang, a militia, or a corporate-backed mercenary outfit. The constant state of violence has led to widespread fear, and many residents have resorted to extreme measures just to ensure their own safety.
The Supernatural and Unexplained
While much of the state’s population may not understand the full extent of the strange and supernatural occurrences happening around them, there are enough rumors and eerie occurrences that residents are becoming increasingly paranoid.
Strange Creatures and Unknown Threats: Across the state, people whisper about odd sightings—large, shadowy figures moving through the streets at night, strange creatures in the forests of Western Massachusetts, and whispers of unnatural beasts that have begun to stalk the cities. While many dismiss these as superstition, the rise of gangs and mercenary groups who operate with frighteningly advanced technology or disturbing rituals suggests that the fears may not be entirely unfounded.
Unexplained Disappearances: There are regular reports of people going missing in certain parts of the state—especially in the more remote areas—and some claim that these disappearances are linked to bizarre cults or violent underground organizations. The government and law enforcement agencies rarely provide answers, and many people have learned to be cautious of the strange happenings that seem to occur just under the surface of normal life.
Conclusion
Massachusetts in Alternate Earth 2040 is a fractured state, where people survive through a combination of military protection, gang affiliation, and sheer willpower. The cities are dangerous, the rural areas isolated, and the streets of Boston and other towns are ruled by ruthless criminals. Despite this, there are still pockets of resistance—small communities that continue to fight for a better future, even in the face of overwhelming odds. For most residents, life is about scraping by and navigating the complex, violent world that surrounds them. The supernatural and unexplained threats are just another layer of uncertainty in an already unpredictable world.
