Maine in 2040 is a land of stark beauty marred by terror and mystery. Its dense forests, rugged coastline, and isolated towns have become both a refuge and a battleground. A haunting presence seems to permeate the state, where the mundane and the supernatural collide, and survival demands not just vigilance but a wary understanding of the forces lurking beyond human comprehension.

Geography and Landmarks:

Abandoned and Cursed Towns:

Some places in Maine have become synonymous with dread:

  • Castle Rock: Abandoned and overrun by nature, this town has a reputation as cursed. Strange lights are sometimes seen among the crumbling buildings, and locals tell chilling tales of anyone foolhardy enough to explore its streets.
  • Derry: A shrinking town with an uneasy air. People speak in whispers of disappearances and odd occurrences, warning travelers to avoid its sewers and waterways at all costs.
  • Jerusalem’s Lot: Known locally as "The Lot," this desolate village is entirely dominated by pale figures who emerge only at night. Travelers are warned to stay far away; those who don’t are never seen again.

Coastal Threats:

The coastline, while beautiful, harbors dangers both seen and unseen. Fishermen tell tales of shadowy forms moving beneath the waves and strange chants carried on the wind from rocky outcroppings at low tide. Devil’s Reef, just offshore, is avoided by all but the most desperate, and even they rarely return.

Urban Dead Zones:

Bangor is a ghost city, devastated by plague and feral madness. The once-thriving community now lies in ruins, patrolled only by scavengers desperate for forgotten technology or supplies, always keeping one eye on the shadows.

Society and Survival:

Fortified Communities:

Survivors have clustered into fortified towns, where strong walls and stronger wills keep the horrors at bay. Places like Haven and Ludlow are known for their self-sufficiency and suspicion of outsiders. In these communities, the old New England spirit of independence has taken on a darker edge, and every citizen is trained to fight or flee when danger comes calling.

Beliefs and Practices:

Faith has fractured into myriad paths. Traditional churches persist, though some preach an apocalyptic fervor, while new movements—ranging from secretive cults to those promising salvation through ancient rituals—have emerged. Many whisper of strange powers manifesting among individuals, further dividing communities between fear and awe.

Technology and Innovation:

Technology is both a boon and a burden. Cybernetic enhancements exist but remain rare, expensive, and often rumored to have unintended consequences, such as strange dreams or behavioral shifts. Some view such advancements with suspicion, fearing they may draw the wrong kind of attention.

Threats and Challenges:

Supernatural Forces:

  • Maine's forests are not safe after dark. Shapeless shadows flit between the trees, and some who venture too deep into the woods are said to come back... changed, if they return at all. The roads, especially at night, are patrolled by figures who seem to fade into the air when approached.

Eldritch Presences:

  • Along the coast and near certain ancient sites, people report visions of impossible geometries, unsettling whispers, and feelings of crushing insignificance. These areas are avoided by all but the foolhardy and those with a death wish.

Undead:

  • Graveyards across the state are no longer places of rest. Ghouls roam freely, scavenging anything they can find, living or dead. In certain areas, entire populations have been overtaken by creatures that move unseen during the day but prowl hungrily at night.

Plague Survivors:

  • The Crossed plague has left parts of Maine uninhabitable. Those infected wander aimlessly, driven by a madness that defies understanding. They destroy all they encounter, and even the monsters that plague Maine’s wilderness seem to avoid them.

Economy and Resources:

Maine’s once-thriving industries have adapted to the new world.

  • Fishing and Logging: Communities that still rely on these trades are heavily fortified, and even the bravest fishermen arm themselves to fend off threats from both sea and land.
  • Artifact Recovery: Scavengers and treasure hunters comb through Maine's cursed ruins, seeking valuable relics, rare technology, and objects of arcane power. These items fetch high prices in safe zones like Portland, a city known for its trade in both the mundane and the mystical.
  •

The Wider New England Region:

New England is fragmented, its communities isolated and self-reliant.

  • Boston: A bastion of humanity, Boston is heavily fortified and serves as a hub for trade, governance, and resistance against the terrors encroaching from the wilderness.
  • Salem: A thriving center of magical activity, where those with unusual gifts gather to learn and hone their abilities. Protected by its practitioners, Salem is one of the few places where hope seems to outweigh despair.
  • Innsmouth: Completely overrun and abandoned to the tides, Innsmouth is shunned as a cursed place. Few who venture near its shores live to share what they’ve seen.

Conclusion:

Maine in 2040 is a place where every shadow carries a threat, and every decision could mean life or death. Its people are survivors, hardened by their environment and united by a shared understanding: the land they call home is alive with forces far beyond human comprehension, and survival depends on knowing when to fight, when to hide, and when to run. It is a place of constant tension, where resilience and ingenuity are tested daily, and hope is a rare but precious commodity.
