04/18/25The Republic of Québec (République du Québec) is a nation in eastern North America, bordered by Hudson Bay and the St. Lawrence River. It is a country with a proud Francophone heritage and a history of isolationism that has evolved in the past few decades. By 2040, Québec is both a symbol of resilience and an enigmatic presence on the world stage, balancing its commitment to tradition with the pressures of a rapidly changing world.
Geography:
Québec occupies the Canadian Shield, or the Ungava Region, a vast expanse of coniferous forests, rivers, and lakes. The terrain is rugged and sparsely populated, with remote northern territories that were once untouched now becoming the epicenter of some of the most dangerous phenomena of Alternate Earth 2040.
From Laforge-Deux to Kasikatunakun, the northern reaches of Québec have become wasteland quarantine zones. These areas are increasingly being abandoned or sealed off due to the presence of The Crossed and the growing threat of Hive creatures.
The Crossed, a viral plague, has spread rapidly across this area, turning its victims into violent, crazed individuals. While the infected may mutilate their bodies in horrific ways, their defining characteristic is the loss of their humanity, resulting in unpredictable, aggressive behavior. The plague has rendered large parts of this zone extremely dangerous for those who try to traverse it.
The Hive presence, once an isolated threat, has begun to creep into the northern regions of Québec as well. Some chitinous protrusions and discoloration typical of Hive presence can be found in areas like Shefferville and Fermont, indicating the beginnings of Hive incursion into the region, though it has not yet reached critical levels. These areas are marked by signs of alien bio-structures and parasitic organisms, serving as a grim reminder of the creeping threat to the nation’s borders.
Politics and Governance:
Québec remains a Socialist Republic, where the National Assembly of Québec governs with 125 seats. The President of Québec, elected every six years, holds significant influence, but there are growing concerns about the centralization of power. Though the country is formally committed to social equity, increasing wealth gaps, corporate influence, and a struggling middle class hint at systemic issues within its political structure.
The Québec Unité, a movement advocating for closer ties with the UCAS, is gaining traction among the younger population. However, some political factions view this push as a betrayal of the country’s sovereignty, leading to rising nationalist sentiments that threaten to fracture Québec’s cohesion. The government’s handling of these tensions has been inconsistent, and rumors of covert suppression of dissent are starting to emerge, casting a shadow on Québec’s commitment to democratic ideals.
Québec’s legal system, based on the Napoleonic Code, is often described as "schizoid" due to contradictory regulations and conflicting exception clauses. While the system is designed to bring balance and fairness, its complexity can be manipulated by those with power. Some factions claim that the law is often weaponized to serve corporate interests, especially in the Enterprise Zones, where megacorporations like Cross Applied Technologies enjoy extraterritoriality and operate with relative impunity. This has led to a growing divide between the wealthy corporate elite and the working classes, with increasing civil unrest reported in the urban centers of Québec City and Montréal.
Economy and Trade:
The relationship with Cross Applied Technologies has been both a boon and a curse. While it has provided significant technological advancements in biotechnology, clean energy, and cyberware, the Enterprise Zones have also become breeding grounds for corporate corruption. These zones, mostly located in Québec City and Montréal, offer megacorporations near-total autonomy, leading to tensions between local authorities and corporate powers. Though the zones have sparked economic growth, the concentration of wealth in the hands of a few has led to increasing inequality, with lower-income areas growing more desperate and disenfranchised.
While Québec's export market in agricultural products and high-tech solutions remains strong, the country’s dependence on megacorporations and the growing influence of foreign powers has led some to question the long-term sustainability of this arrangement. Québec's economy, once built on self-sufficiency, now relies heavily on the volatile global market and shifting alliances, making it vulnerable to economic shocks and external pressures.
Society and Culture:
Québec’s Francophone culture remains at the heart of the nation, with the French language and traditions proudly upheld. However, the increasing acceptance of English as a legal business language is fueling tensions among the population, with some groups feeling that the country’s identity is being diluted in favor of corporate interests. The Québec Unité movement, which seeks to align Québec more closely with the UCAS, also adds to the cultural rift, as it challenges the long-standing values of independence and self-reliance that defined Québec for decades.
While Québec’s social programs remain a point of pride, with universal healthcare and education systems in place, there are signs of strain. Services in rural and northern regions are stretched thin, as the central government struggles to balance the needs of remote communities with the demands of urban centers and megacorporate interests. Additionally, corporate-driven policies in the Enterprise Zones have led to an underground economy where workers in unregulated sectors face exploitation, sometimes in the form of cybernetic enhancements or black market labor practices. The country’s working-class has begun to rise in discontent, with growing protests against the government’s increasing corporate ties and calls for greater labor rights protections.
Strategic and Military Considerations:
Québec’s military presence has grown in response to both internal and external threats. The border with the UCAS remains a tense flashpoint, with some factions in Québec seeking closer ties with the UCAS military for protection against increasingly erratic neighbors. Meanwhile, northern Québec faces incursions from Hive creatures and other hostile entities seeking to capitalize on the region’s resources. The expansion of alien-like ecosystems into Québec’s territories has forced the government to invest heavily in defense, but the growing threat of Hive expansion in the Arctic and Northern Québec raises doubts about the nation’s ability to maintain its territorial integrity.
The northern territories are now heavily restricted and considered quarantine zones, where the presence of The Crossed has left entire regions overrun with violent, mutated humans who once inhabited the area. These zones are highly dangerous and have become a site for military operations, as well as clandestine research into the effects of the viral plague. However, with limited resources, the government has struggled to contain the spread of these horrors, leaving northern Québec a frontier of fear, death, and corporate interests eager to exploit whatever resources remain.
