In 2040, Thailand exists in a fractured, lawless state, its once-thriving society now crumbling under the weight of corruption and a dark, unseen force that seems to poison everything it touches. The country is divided into six regions, each more a reflection of rot and decay than a place of prosperity. The northern Thai Highlands, once revered for their natural beauty, have become a haven for human trafficking rings, where the vulnerable—especially those from across Southeast Asia—are sold into forced labor, prostitution, and brutal underground fighting rings. The northeast, Isan, is little better, a wasteland of broken families and villages ravaged by illegal drug production, where the poorest are left to wither while the powerful line their pockets with blood-soaked profits.

The Chao Phraya River, which once carried the lifeblood of the nation, now flows with the subtle stain of corruption and the remains of unchecked industrial practices. The flat plains of the river valley are home to criminal syndicates and corrupt officials who skim the wealth of the nation while burying their crimes beneath layers of bureaucracy and falsified records. In the towns and cities, illegal drugs are more abundant than food, with entire neighborhoods ravaged by addiction, violence, and death. Chemical factories churn out synthetic drugs, while opium and heroin flood the streets, destroying entire families and leaving behind only hollow shells of once-vibrant communities.

Further south, the Kra Isthmus and the Malay Peninsula have become lawless zones where human trafficking, illegal gambling, and extortion have entrenched themselves. The deep-sea ports once used for commerce are now hubs for smuggling everything from weapons to slaves. The government may claim control, but it’s nothing more than a puppet regime, manipulated by those who profit from the ruin of the people. The Gulf of Thailand, with its shallow waters and pristine beaches, has become a façade for a darker world—where tourists are lured in only to be caught in the web of vice, exploitation, and horrific crimes. The beaches hide not only luxury resorts but also the screams of those trapped in endless cycles of abuse.

The Andaman Sea, once a beautiful escape, is now just another frontier for vice. Islands like Phuket, Krabi, and Phang Nga, still marketed as tourist paradises, harbor a far darker reality. Beneath the surface of the sparkling waters, unspeakable horrors fester, and many of the "luxurious" resorts serve as fronts for illegal operations: human trafficking, drug running, and secret auctions of human lives. The supernatural has also begun to taint the air, as eerie whispers and dark figures are said to haunt the forests and shores. Local shamans speak of restless spirits—lost souls caught between this world and the next—who feed on the misery that clings to the land. The dead do not rest here; they roam, ravenous and waiting.

At the heart of this decaying nation, the monarchy retains its iron grip on power, but even the King, Rama XX, is little more than a figurehead in a shadowed kingdom. The political system, a grotesque parody of a British-style parliament, is a theater for the elite, where laws are signed with blood and money. The King's decrees are less about serving the people and more about maintaining control over a fragmented and broken land. The supposed "free market" has devolved into a black hole where everything is bought and sold—people, lives, and souls.

Human trafficking runs rampant, with children and adults alike abducted from the streets and sold into the hellish underworld of sex work and forced labor. The streets of Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Pattaya are lined with hidden brothels, drug dens, and fighting pits, where people are sold, used, and discarded like objects. The dark underbelly of the country is alive with gambling rings that pit the desperate against each other in brutal, bloody matches for the amusement of the elite. No one is safe, not even the rich, as betrayal and manipulation are constant. The streets echo with the whispers of Fixers—deal-makers who traffic in everything from illegal weapons to stolen children, orchestrating violence and destruction from the shadows.

But even in a world rife with crime, there’s something darker in the air. A supernatural presence, unseen but deeply felt, clings to the land like a disease. The astral plane, polluted and tainted by some invisible force, infects the physical world with an overwhelming sense of unease. The once-bright streets of Thailand now appear muted, the vibrant neon lights casting hollow reflections. The air feels thick, and the world seems draped in a perpetual haze of sadness. Faces, even those of the most vibrant people, seem worn and drained by an unseen weight. It’s a low hum of despair that infects the spirit, dragging everything down into an endless cycle of weariness.

In the midst of this societal decay, ghosts haunt the alleys, their glowing eyes watching from the shadows. The dead, restless and ravenous, feed off the suffering that lingers in the land. Rituals are performed in secret to bind these spirits to the living, using them as tools of manipulation and control. Shamans claim to commune with these restless dead, but few dare speak of what they see in the dark.

The economy is a chaotic mess—officially, the baht remains the currency, but on the streets, anything can be exchanged. Foreign currencies, gold, or even human lives are worth more than any paper note. There’s no black market for the baht; it’s too worthless in the face of the true economy of Thailand: illicit trade. The only rule is that there are no rules.

Haggling is a life-or-death skill in the markets, where everything is for sale—from the cheapest knock-offs to organs harvested from the living. The wealthy hide behind layers of protection, their lives bought with influence and blood. For the rest, survival hinges on the ability to haggle. The streets are filled with thieves, razor artists, and con men who prey on the unwary. Scams are a way of life, and those who don’t know how to play the game become the next victims of the city’s endless hunger. Trust doesn’t exist in this world. In a place where everyone is a player in a deadly game, trusting anyone means a death sentence.

In the midst of it all, there are few things more sacred than the Buddha images. Smuggling them out of the country is considered an unforgivable sin, and the consequences are swift and brutal. Though the government may turn a blind eye to most crimes, desecrating the Buddha is a sin so heinous that even the corrupt police will turn on those who dare commit it. For those trapped in the underworld, even the sacred is tainted by the cruelty of the system.

This is Thailand in 2040: a place where every transaction is soaked in blood, where the line between the living and the dead is a blur, and where the rich thrive on the misery of the poor. The supernatural, the corrupt, and the criminal all intertwine in a deadly dance, and in this underworld, nothing—no one—is safe.
