Denmark is a Scandinavian country comprising the Jutland Peninsula and numerous islands.
Score 245
02/03/25An isthmus to the north of Germany and its associated islands. Denmark has a massive agricultural industry and most of the mainland (Jylland or Jutland) is dedicated to it, as is Fyn (Funen), the islands. Over 94% of the population now lives in Copenhagen City which has expanded to cover the northern half of Sjaelland (Zealand), hiding behind huge sea walls. Many of the other islands shrank as the sea level rose, and some have been lost completely.
In 2040, Denmark has evolved into a nation deeply shaped by its geography and the challenges of a changing world. The country, situated on an isthmus connecting northern Germany to the Scandinavian Peninsula, is characterized by its sprawling agricultural heartland and an urban-dominated populace.
Denmark's mainland, Jylland (Jutland), along with Fyn (Funen) and the surviving islands, remains the agricultural backbone of the nation. Thanks to advanced agricultural technologies, vertical farming, and precision techniques, Denmark has maintained its status as a critical food exporter in Europe. The majority of its mainland is dedicated to vast fields of genetically optimized crops, wind-turbine-lined farms, and innovative aquaponics systems. This commitment to sustainable agriculture has allowed Denmark to thrive economically, even as rising sea levels claimed portions of its territory.
The islands, however, tell a story of loss and resilience. Many of the smaller islands have been submerged, and those that remain have shrunk significantly. The sea-level rise prompted a nationwide reclamation and fortification effort, with resources diverted toward protecting key areas and adapting to the encroaching waters. This has left much of Denmark sparsely populated outside Copenhagen, with abandoned villages and submerged landscapes serving as stark reminders of the climate crisis.
Despite these challenges, Denmark has leveraged its renewable energy expertise, primarily wind and tidal power, to become one of the world's leading green energy producers. This innovation has ensured Denmarkâs economic stability and positioned it as a global leader in environmental technology.
