Score 262
02/03/25The Arctic Ocean, the smallest and shallowest of the world’s five oceans, spans an area of approximately 14,060,000 square kilometers (5,430,000 square miles) and remains the coldest ocean on Earth. Recognized as an ocean by the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), it is sometimes referred to by oceanographers as the Arctic Mediterranean Sea or even described as an estuary of the Atlantic. It also serves as the northernmost part of the interconnected world ocean.
Situated around the North Pole in the Northern Hemisphere, the Arctic Ocean extends south to about 60°N and is bordered by Eurasia and North America. Its defining boundaries follow natural topographic features, such as the Bering Strait to the Pacific and the Greenland-Scotland Ridge to the Atlantic. Sea ice covers much of the ocean throughout the year and almost entirely during winter, though its seasonal retreat has become markedly more pronounced in recent decades.
Surface temperatures and salinity levels fluctuate with the seasons, driven by the melting and freezing of the ice cover. The Arctic has the lowest average salinity of the major oceans, owing to limited evaporation, substantial freshwater inflows from rivers and melting glaciers, and its restricted exchange with higher-salinity waters of surrounding seas. Summer ice cover has been observed to shrink by over 50%, with satellite data from the US National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) showing a continuous downward trend. In 2012, the Arctic ice extent hit a record minimum, with a 49% reduction compared to late 20th-century averages.
By 2040, these changes are even more stark, though subtle anomalies have begun to draw attention. Alongside the seasonal melting, researchers have noted pockets of ice that resist thawing, their cores colder and denser than expected. These persistent regions have become the focus of scientific inquiry, though their exact nature remains elusive. Whispers of unusual patterns within the ice or unexplained temperature readings circulate among the scientific community, hinting at phenomena that defy conventional understanding.
Still, for most, the Arctic Ocean remains a place of extremes—a harsh, remote, and fragile expanse where the interplay of ice and water shapes the northernmost frontier of a changing world.
