Socotra stands as a rare exception amidst a world of growing devastation, but its unique beauty has been subtly reshaped by the arrival and claim of the Castanic people.

Geographic and Ecological Transformation

In 2040, the island of Socotra remains a geographic anomaly, but its once-pristine, alien beauty has been subtly reshaped. While the rugged limestone mountains, sandstone cliffs, and endemic flora still exist, they now serve as the foundation for a new, imposed topography. Their settlement reshaped parts of the island, creating basalt terraces and ember-lit forests, reflecting the Castanics' own native volcanic environment. This physical reshaping has introduced a volcanic element to the native landscape, and the once vibrant, otherworldly forests, home to the iconic Dragon's Blood Tree, now glow with a faint inner warmth that reflects the Castanic's own inner fire. The island's unique biological treasures are now intertwined with a volcanic and occultic presence, but this does not necessarily mean they are in decline.

The Inhabitants and a Shattered Society

The most dramatic impact has been on the island's human population. Before the Castanic arrival, the people of Socotra were a hardy, resourceful community of ancient Socotri descendants and recent survivors who had maintained a unique culture, an autonomous tribal society, and a deep respect for their environment. The arrival of the Castanics, however, shattered this delicate balance.

While the native Socotri people were permitted to remain and continue their traditional ways, with their land and lives untouched, the Castanics imposed their authority over the wider island. Many other human survivors who had sought refuge on Socotra were not so fortunate. It is known that these populations were displaced; some were assimilated into Castanic society, while others vanished. The island is no longer a shared sanctuary but a Castanic redoubt, where the native Socotri are integrated into a new, proud, and often brutal hierarchy, and the melting pot of survivors now finds a different kind of authority in power.

Access to the island is now highly restricted. General tourism and sightseeing are no longer permitted unless a foreign government submits a special application to the Castanic government on behalf of would-be tourists. However, the Castanics allow and encourage any and all scientific pursuits, with dispensation from the Castanic government.

Legacy and Shifting Threats

The fate of Socotra and its inhabitants is no longer solely in their hands. The island's unique resources, which once attracted desperate factions and raiders, are now under the control of a cunning, dangerous, and politically ambitious race.

Socotra's new status has heightened tensions. Its presence astride a major shipping route means it is now a prize eyed with suspicion by corporations, navies, and occult societies, who must now contend with the Castanics to gain access to the island's riches.

The Castanics endure as a people-in-exile, carrying the embers of their homeworld into the fragile balance of the Materium, and their presence has irrevocably changed Socotra from a natural sanctuary into a prized and contested jewel in a hostile world.
