Jebidiah was born and raised in the city of Neverwinter. He was born into an affluent merchant family and send to prestigious schools. Due to his families station he was accepted into the Blackstaff tower in Waterdeep, an academy of arcane apprentices. He never really had the intellect to excel in arcane learning, although was a vivacious reader and had the Alderidge silver tongue. He spent much of his time in the vast library and managed to talk his way into the various restricted sections. It was here that he first found the occult, and found that devils intrigued him. After it became clear that he lacked the requisite skills to become a wizard and the natural talent of a sorcerer, he was shipped back home. Here he apprenticed with the Magisters and Aldermen of the city of Neverwinter to become a scribe. He found the work boring, however excelled at understanding the laws and tenants of the city. Even more so he learned how to manipulate and find loopholes in the laws, which gave him a reputation amongst the wealthy class who wished to absolve themselves of crimes. Thus Jebidiah left the service of the city and struck out on his own, as a professional Advocate as he called himself. Jebidiah revelled in this task and soon became a very wealthy man in his own rights, which afforded him the resources to pursue his hobby of devils.
As his station grew in the city, so too did his arrogance. He believed himself to be the man who could get anything done. He was able to talk his way into and out of almost any situation, although he grew bored. Bored with always winning against inferior opponents, bored with the cases of adultery, of revenge killings, of letting rich noblemen sons find loopholes in the law. Jebidiah wanted a challenge! He set out to win against an opponent who was renowned in laws and contracts, a devil. Jebidiah started to research specific devils and how they completed their contracts and deals. He spent most of his considerable fortune in the endeavour and asked for many favours from wizarding friends from his days at the Blackstaff.
Eventually he felt he was ready, he enacted the rites and summoned forth a lesser demon. A Lemure of particularly low station, however Jebidiah felt he should start at the bottom and work his way up. A simple deal was struck, a deal that Jebidiah has researched and understood. A deal for a name of a devil greater than this Lemure. All he had to provide was the currency that devils cherished so much, a soul. This was easy for a man like Jebidiah, in a place like Neverwinter. Jebidiah changed tactics, instead of representing the wealthy he started prosecuting for the city. Every soul that Jebidiah sent to the gallows was a soul he used to bargain with. So little by little Jebidiah began to strike deals with greater and greater devils, but as the devils increased in station their negotiation skills also increased.
One day as Jebidiah called forth his next devil to bargain with, it did not go the way that he had planned. The devil that stood before him was female, an extremely attractive female. She resembled a tiefling, however had hoofed feet and a scaled tail that flicked lazily around the summoning circle. Her name was Zaburra and she was an outcast archdevil, a Harvester devil whom was stripped of her title and banished from the devil hierarchy. She heard of a mortal who was making deals with devils and generally getting the best end of the bargain, somehow retaining his own soul. She wanted to recruit him to work for her, Zaburra wanted to climb the ranks of the devils again and claim back her title of Archdevil. In return she offered him power and prestige the likes he had never known, she offered to help make him a devil when his time on the material plane had ended. This piqued Jebidiah’s interest, if he could enter the 9 hells as a demon of some higher rank he would be able to continue his favourite past time of dealing and making contracts for the rest of time.
Zaburra needed 3 artifacts to bring her back to power, all of which are located in the prime material plane. The deal boiled down to Zaburra giving Jebidiah access to the powers he requires to search for these items and continue to train him in the art of devil contracts. Jebidiah must find the artifacts before he dies permanently and his soul leaves the prime material plane, and continue to provide souls to Zaburra as he travels.
