Exploded Continent
-
Formerly in one piece the magical devastation that blew up this continent is a mystery.
Score 1493
10/25/24The Exploded Continent is a shattered remnant of what was once a massive landmass, violently fractured by a cataclysmic event that left it in pieces. Now a series of fragmented islands, the continent floats over chaotic, unpredictable waters that pulse and churn, a constant reminder of the forces that split it apart. These islands rise on sheer cliffs, with rocky edges often veiled in mist and mystery, suspended by powerful magical or gravitational forces that defy conventional logic and keep them aloft.
Geography and Environment
-
The Islands
Each island of the Exploded Continent is a unique fragment of the original landmass, with environments ranging from craggy, forested cliffs to barren rocky outcrops. The islands vary in size and elevation, but all are suspended high above the violent seas below. Due to their steep cliffs and isolated terrain, many of these islands remain untouched, with only the hardiest explorers daring to cross the gaps between them.- Cliff Faces: The cliffs of the islands are sheer and jagged, with many edges jutting out over the roaring seas below. Caves and tunnels are carved into these cliffs by Tinker Gnomes, who have created intricate passageways, hideouts, and outposts across the islands. These gnomes have also set up makeshift catapults and nets along the cliff edges, allowing individuals to launch themselves—or their supplies—to the next island over.
-
Chaotic Waters
The seas below the islands are in constant motion, with pulsating waves and violent currents that make them nearly impossible to navigate. The waters are unpredictable, with powerful geysers of water and energy erupting sporadically, sending plumes of water and magical energy high into the air. These chaotic waters glow faintly at night, casting an eerie light up to the islands above, making it appear as though the entire continent floats over a vast, otherworldly sea. -
Magical or Gravitational Forces
The forces that keep the islands aloft are still a mystery. Scholars and wizards believe that either ancient magic or an unknown gravitational anomaly sustains their suspension. This unexplained power affects everything from the weather around the islands to the strange magnetic anomalies that interfere with compasses and magical instruments. The magic is so strong that even small objects, once thrown from one island to the next, seem to be subtly guided along their intended path, allowing the gnomes’ launch systems to work.
Society and Culture on the Exploded Continent
Due to the fragmented nature of the land and the dangers below, societies on the Exploded Continent have developed a highly adaptable and innovative culture. The Tinker Gnomes have become the primary settlers and engineers, creating a web of outposts, launch points, and rope bridges between certain islands. These gnomes are known for their bold, sometimes reckless, inventions, and they use the natural cliffs and tunnels to hide their more ambitious projects from prying eyes.
-
Travel and Trade: With no reliable way to navigate the seas below, travel between islands is conducted primarily through launching platforms, glider suits, and zip lines. Supplies and travelers are launched between islands using gnome-built catapults, which operate with a remarkable degree of precision. For larger cargo or high-stakes crossings, the gnomes have constructed strong, magically-reinforced nets to safely catch those who attempt these daring jumps.
-
Outposts and Settlements: Most islands only have small outposts, but a few of the larger islands host established communities, complete with workshops, trade posts, and communal areas where gnomes, merchants, and travelers can exchange supplies and stories. Gnomes run the forges and engineering centers, while skilled explorers and thrill-seekers often find work as couriers, launching themselves from island to island to deliver messages and goods.
-
Cave Networks: Many of the islands have extensive cave systems carved into their cliff faces. The Tinker Gnomes have expanded these caves, using them to store supplies, construct defensive structures, and run experiments with new launching mechanisms. These cave networks are also equipped with signal flares, pulley systems, and even small lookout stations, where scouts keep watch over the shifting seas and the neighboring islands.

The Whispering Tunnels
This island is known for its complex network of natural tunnels that amplify and carry sounds in strange ways. Travelers have reported hearing whispers, distant roars, and even music resonating through these caves. The Tinker Gnomes have expanded these tunnels to create secret passageways and storage rooms, and the island is sometimes used as a meeting place for clandestine gatherings and private deals.
The Mystery of the Cataclysm
The event that shattered the continent remains shrouded in mystery, with only fragments of history and folklore hinting at what might have happened. Some legends claim it was a magical experiment gone awry, while others suggest a war between powerful beings that tore the land asunder. The constant activity of the chaotic waters and bursts of energy from below are believed to be remnants of that ancient cataclysm, still echoing through the environment centuries later.
Life and Culture on the Edge
The people who live on the Exploded Continent are marked by a deep sense of adaptability, resourcefulness, and resilience. Living above dangerous, chaotic waters, they are accustomed to a life of risk and innovation. The Tinker Gnomes, with their daring engineering feats, have established a unique culture that revolves around exploration, discovery, and survival. Travelers and thrill-seekers often make their way to the Exploded Continent for the adventure, adding to the mystique of this fragmented, airborne land.
In the Exploded Continent, isolation has fostered a culture of daring, where the impossible becomes routine and every island is a new frontier, waiting to be bridged, explored, and conquered.
