a small village

07/26/25

Location: Southern reaches of the Methodical Mountains, nestled into the lower slopes but still well within snowbound elevation.
Climate: Bitterly cold; snow covers the village nine months of the year, with blizzards common in late autumn and early spring.
Population: ~230 permanent residents, mostly hardy mountain folk, dwarves, goliaths, and humans.

Overview:

Terraskan is a rugged, isolated village that survives through resilience, resourcefulness, and clever architecture. Snowfall is so constant and deep that surface travel is impractical most of the year. Instead, a series of stone-reinforced tunnels and subterranean walkways connect nearly all buildings, using house basements as anchor points. This underground network is known locally as "the Veins."

Aboveground, the village appears sparse: stout, low-slung stone homes with sharply pitched roofs, all built to withstand avalanches and heavy accumulation. Smoke curls from narrow chimneys even in mid-summer, as fires are rarely allowed to go out entirely.

Notable Features:

  • The Veins:
The lifeblood of Terraskan, this web of subterranean corridors allows villagers to move, trade, and gather without braving the snow. Torches and everburning lanterns line the routes. Some families paint their sections with identifying sigils or murals, making navigation easier during whiteouts.

  • Sheriff’s Hall:
The modest but well-reinforced headquarters of Rook Kesslan, the village’s protector and lawkeeper. Situated at a central junction in the Veins, it contains jail cells, a small war-room, and a tactician’s map of the village and nearby passes. Rook, a grizzled veteran of harsher places, is well-respected for his blunt fairness and unmatched survival knowledge.

  • The Hearthwell Inn:
The only true tavern, popular with travelers and locals alike. Built around a deep geothermal spring vent that keeps it unusually warm year-round. The ale is passable, but the soup is legendary.

  • The Tunnel Temple:
A low-ceilinged subterranean sanctuary maintained by mountain druids and elemental clerics. Worship here focuses on survival, wind, stone, and fire, with a strong reverence for spirits of the land.

  • Windspire Lookout:
A high tower built above the snowline, accessible by lift from inside the village. Used to signal approaching danger, assess stormfronts, or spot inbound traders from the pass. Manning it is dangerous duty, rotated among volunteers.

Economy & Trade:

Terraskan exports hardy goats, glacial herbs, iron ore, and carved stone items. During the brief thaw, traders from Earthguard and Lakeguard stop by, often seeking high-quality wool, smoked meats, and anti-blizzard enchantments crafted by the local hedge-mage.

Defenses:

  • Sheriff Rook Kesslan maintains a small militia of 12 snow-trained fighters, most of whom are also miners or hunters.

  • Traps and collapsed tunnel techniques exist in case of siege.

  • Rumors say Rook once defended the village from a winter wight and its frost-ghoul kin without waiting for reinforcements.
