Llael
-
Kingdom in Tekhan
Score 685
10/30/24Llael exists on the “Upper” plateau of Tekhan, with a distinct geographic and technological landscape that separates its people. At the heart of the kingdom are five steam-age cities connected by a vast network of railroads, embodying the kingdom’s steampunk character. Beyond the reach of these railroads, nomadic groups live at a post-apocalyptic medieval technology level, traversing the land without the advanced industry seen in the cities. The stark contrast between the railroad-connected populace and the nomadic communities creates a complex cultural and economic landscape.
Geography
- Elevation: The Upper region of Tekhan sits 200 feet above the bay and the lower territories, making it a natural fortress.
- Tekhan Bay: Positioned along the northern cliffs, Tekhan Bay serves as a barrier and trade route, with a sheer drop creating both a breathtaking view and a formidable defense.
- Railroad Network: The railroad system is the lifeline of the steam-powered cities, with critical stops and interchanges connecting the five key cities and extending to the nearby kingdoms of Sul and Khador.
- Klarian Forest: South of the rail network and separating the steam age from the medieval regions, the Klarian Forest is a mysterious area that both groups regard with superstition, as it’s filled with ancient ruins and unpredictable weather patterns.
Population Groups
-
Steam-Age Urban Dwellers
- Technology: Living around the railroads, the urban population of Llael experiences a steampunk lifestyle. These residents use steam-powered machinery, automatons, and mechanical innovations. They live in cities or railroad switch towns, where industries such as engineering, transportation, and manufacturing dominate.
- Culture: This population values progress, engineering, and trade. Their lives are closely connected to the railroads, which they depend on for travel, trade, and communication with other cities and neighboring kingdoms. The urban dwellers have a structured, almost regimented way of life, with guilds, inventors, and a reliance on mechanical ingenuity.
-
Nomadic Medieval People
- Technology: Outside the reach of the railroad, the nomadic people live with medieval-level technology in a post-apocalyptic world. They rely on traditional tools, horses, and natural resources. Lacking the mechanical prowess of the cities, they view the steam age cities as distant and strange.
- Culture: The nomadic groups are self-sufficient, relying on foraging, hunting, and barter trade. They live in small, mobile communities, traveling through the land with reverence for nature and a strong oral tradition. Their relationship with the steampunk cities is limited, with trade only occurring occasionally, often at the fringes of cities or in market squares near the railroads.

Summary of Llael
Llael’s distinct divide between steam-powered urban areas and post-apocalyptic medieval nomads creates a unique kingdom where two worlds coexist with limited interaction. The kingdom’s reliance on its rail system links the five cities, each with unique roles in industry, trade, or defense, while nomadic populations live independently outside this system, often seen as mysterious or archaic by city dwellers. This setting provides a complex, layered society where innovation meets tradition, and the contrasts between high-tech steampunk advancements and primitive survival add depth to the kingdom of Llael.
