Duchy of Perthenum

The Duchess of Perthenum resides in the beautiful white coastal fort of Albaneer halfway between the mouth of the Verdane River and the border to the Duchy of Hubnuic. Elenadiryl, or the Hostess of the Dawn, as she is called by the people of Duchy is renown for her spectacular and extravagant celebrations in Fortress Albaneer. She is the only half-elf ruler of a duchy, but she has the full support of the king. The fertile area around Albaneer City is filled with rich sugar plantations and banana groves. Although Perthenum maintains a significant navy, they have on minimal land forces. The wealthy in the Northern Kingdom protect their resort community. Surrounding duchies and the king have agreements to send support if ever a land based foe were to appear. However, Hubnuic Hold has been quiet for nearly 100 years, and Clinaugh is too chaotic for an organized attack. The recent incursion into Cardem by the forces of Duke Morgan DuRegan of Clinaugh is the first in nearly forty years. 

Perthenum is known for mild winters and hot, dry summers. Orchards and fields dot the land comprising both high mountains, and plains, wetlands, and beaches. In the west, the high rocky outcrops of ancient limestone in the mountainous Brighdeen region are fiercely cold in winter, but have a benign summer climate. Bandits roam between the small villages extorting protection or forced labor to be sold in Albaneer, the only city left in the kingdom to still allow slavery against the order of the king. Griffons can be seen flying high above the lush forests in the north of the region. On the rocky ocean coast, hidden coves sometimes harbor pirate sloops hunting for stray merchant ships. Fields of cattle trade exotic leathers out of the Port du Cardem and a wide syndicate of organized criminals controls the city of Batilliano.  Although not at war, the dwarves of Hubnuic Hold fiercely protect their gem mines in the Brighdeen mountain range and often attack any thieves from Perthenum. Currently, the duchy is in a civil way. The half-drow, once allowed only to be slaves, have risen up against their masters and seek to carve out a place of freedom. The members of the Church of the Doheaga have created an underground collection of safehouses to protect escaped slaves and to help fund the uprising to overthrow the current Duchess and her wealthy nobles.
