The Sword Coast is a vast and storied region along the western shores of Faerun, stretching from the Sea of Moving Ice in the north to the merchant nation of Amn in the south. Bounded by the Sea of Swords to the west and extending inland into the Western Heartlands, this region is defined by its dramatic geography—ranging from the white cliffs that rise sharply for hundreds of miles between the River Dessarin and Baldur's Gate to the rolling grasslands, dense forests, and treacherous badlands further inland.

While often seen by travelers as a mere passage to more significant destinations, the Sword Coast is a vibrant land of opportunity, conflict, and deep history. It is home to some of the most influential cities in the Realms, each contributing to the region’s diverse culture and thriving economy. Among these are Waterdeep, the City of Splendors, a dominant center of trade and intrigue; Baldur’s Gate, the Gateway to the Realms, renowned for its wealth and cosmopolitan influence; and Neverwinter, the Jewel of the North, known for its resilience and magical wonders.

Some claim the region takes its name from the cliffs that resemble the sharp edge of a blade, while others attribute it to the dangers of its waters, where treacherous reefs and pirate-infested coves make seafaring perilous. Whatever the origin, the Sword Coast remains a place where fortunes are won and lost, where adventurers carve their legacies, and where the echoes of ancient civilizations whisper through ruined strongholds and forgotten temples.

The Chionthar River serves as a vital artery of commerce, linking Baldur’s Gate to key inland cities such as Elturel, Iriaebor, Berdusk, and the trade-hub of Scornubel. Caravans and riverboats ensure that the wealth of the Sword Coast flows deep into Faerûn’s interior, connecting the coast’s bustling ports with the Western Heartlands and beyond. The region’s extensive roadways, including the Trade Way and the Coast Way, facilitate the movement of goods, mercenaries, and adventurers alike.

To the north, the rugged frontier of Luskan and Icewind Dale marks the region’s boundary with the frozen reaches of the Spine of the World, where barbarian tribes, dwarven strongholds, and ancient threats lurk beyond civilization’s reach. In the south, the lands transition into the more structured and feudal territories of Amn, Tethyr, and Calimshan, where mercantile wealth dictates power.

Unlike the Heartlands or the Empires of the East, the Sword Coast lacks a central governing authority, instead comprising a patchwork of independent city-states, petty baronies, and frontier settlements, each with its own laws, rulers, and rivalries.

Two major coalitions vie for influence in the region:

  • The Lords' Alliance, a powerful confederation of city-states, including Baldur’s Gate, Waterdeep, Neverwinter, and Daggerford, dedicated to mutual security and trade stability.
  • The Zhentarim, a shadowy mercantile network that operates both openly and secretly, seeking to control commerce and power through subterfuge and force.
Amid these factions, lawless areas such as the Mere of Dead Men, the Cloak Wood, and the Nelanther Isles serve as havens for bandits, pirates, and exiles, keeping the coast’s wild reputation alive.

Beyond its economic and strategic significance, the Sword Coast is a land brimming with mystery, magic, and peril. Ancient ruins from lost civilizations, such as Illefarn, Netheril, and the Ruins of Athkatla, lie scattered across its wilderness. Wandering warbands, monstrous hordes, and cults dedicated to dark gods threaten settlements, while whispers of dragon lairs, hidden dungeons, and planar rifts lure adventurers seeking fame and fortune.

With opportunity and danger in equal measure, the Sword Coast remains a land where heroes rise, villains scheme, and legends are forged. Whether through the dealings of merchant-lords, the clash of warring factions, or the quiet steps of an adventurer entering an unmarked tomb, the region’s fate is ever shaped by those bold enough to seize it.
