Ten-Towns Town

Bryn Shander, the largest of the Ten Towns in Icewind Dale, serves as the region's trading hub. Positioned atop a hill south of Kelvin's Cairn, it is the first sight travelers see when crossing the Spine of the World via the Ten Trail. The town's circular wooden palisade rises from the snowy landscape, and the twinkling lights of its inns offer a promise of warmth and refuge from the harsh winds of the Dale.

The town's history began as a lone cabin along the trail to Maer Dualdon, where weary travelers rested before continuing their journey to Targos or other settlements. It evolved into a bustling outpost as traders from different communities established presences around the hilltop cabin, sparking a trade rivalry that eventually led to the formation of the town. After a violent feud, representatives from the neighboring towns convened at the site, marking the establishment of Bryn Shander's first council.

Today, Bryn Shander is a thriving frontier town, where fishers, trappers, traders, and adventurers converge in the busy market square. The town acts as a gateway to the rest of Ten-Towns and a lifeline to the civilized south, with caravans bringing valuable southern goods, such as rich dyes, spices, hardwoods, and textiles, in exchange for scrimshaw and knucklehead ivory from the Dale. Bryn Shander's central market attracts people from across Icewind Dale, including dwarves from Kelvin's Cairn, traders from Ironmaster, and even Reghed barbarian hunters.

The town is surrounded by a 30-foot-high wall made of two concentric rings of wooden poles, with the gap between filled with dirt and rubble, providing protection against barbarian raids and dangerous beasts. Bryn Shander is governed by a speaker, who also serves on the Ten-Towns council alongside representatives from the other nine communities. The town lacks a centralized religion but is home to around 1,200 resilient inhabitants who face the challenges of life in Icewind Dale together.
